Abstract

The dormancy in Cassia fistula was due to hard coat of the seeds. The dormancy could easily be broken when freshly collected dry seeds were treated with conc. H₂SO₄ for 5 to 11 min. Which increased the germination from 4% (of check) to more than 67%. The percentage of abnormal seedling was very high when seeds pre-soaked with water for 24 hrs were treated with H₂SO₄. Rhizopus nigricans was the most common fungus associated with rotting seeds and abnormal seedlings. Aspergillus flavus, A. niger and Penicillium sp. Were also recorded from rotting seeds. On inoculation R. nigricans increased seed-rotting and seed abnormalities appreciably. The pathogen also caused collar rot and inhibition of ischolar_mains. The partial or complete withering of the infected cotyledonary leaves was also observed.

Abstract

C. clavatum is reported as the cause of ischolar_main disease of E. hybrid. In the inoculated soil the seedling started willing after 5-6 days of transplantation and all the seedlings were killed within three weekss of transplation. Symptoms on the incoulated seedlings are described. The cultural character of the fungus on PDA, rapeseed agar, malt extract agar and Czapeks (dox) agar are given. Growth of the fungus was maximum on rapeseed agar and Czapeks (dox) agar and minimum on malt extract agar. The pathogen was also found associated with seed of E. hybrid, Eleven fungicides were evaluated by food poison technique. All the treatments were better than control. Aggalot was the most effective followed be Thiram and Vitavax, while Cuman-L was the least effective.
