Abstract

The results of experiments in the retapping by Rill method of the healed up channels in Chir pine already tapped by Cup and lip method, carried out at New Forest, Dehra Dun have revealed that the resin yield was 4.45 kg/blaze which is viabJe from economic point of view. Therefore, the resin production may be supplemented by retapping healed up channels of abandoned pine trees if such trees are available in pine growing states.

Abstract

Resin yield increases as the diameter increases upto 45 cm and then it decreases. Based on the model, optimum diameter of trees where yield will be maximum is observed to be 45 cm. This model will be used for forecasting the resin yield from the trees having diameter between 35-55 cm.

Abstract

In the personal study a method od preparing 20% acid mixture on volume/volume has been proposed to achive higher resin yeild from pines. In accordance with the proposed method it has been compared to prevalent one. i.e. method based on weight/weight and it has been found that proposed menthod consistently superior method based on weight/weight in all the months under study as well as overall months together.

Abstract

Pines have been commercially tapped for resin by "Cup&Lip method" from the beginning of this century. Recently it has been noticed that considerable damage to the growth and the timber of the pine trees is caused by resin tapping. To solve this problem a new method of tapping called "Rill method" was suggested/evolved by Dr. V.P.S. Verma the then Officer-in-Charge, M.F.P. Branch during the last decade. Studies were undertaken at F.R.I., Dehra Dun to compare the healing rate of blazes tapped by Cup&Lip method and "Rill method" in Pinus roxburghii. The studies revealed that while the rate of healing of blazes made by Rill method ranged from 19.2 to 51.3 cm² per year in the case of Cup & Lip method it was from 4.8 to 12.2 cm² per year.
