Abstract

Lemon grass was tested with three spacing and four fertility levels under Poplar (Populus deltoides 'G-3') for its performance in Kumaun foothills for two years (1993-1994). The treatment combination S₂F₃ (spacing 45 x 45 cm and fertility level N₂₅₀P₁₀₀K₈₀) proved to be superior in respect of number of tillers (78 and 114), plant height (153 and 150 cm), herbage yeild (57.6 and 68 t/ha) and oil yield (260.9 and 309.4 kg/ha) when compared to other treatments in the first and second year, respectively. The soil content and quality of oil was similar in all the treatments.

Abstract

The present investigation deals with effect of structural composition of agroforestry system, number of woody perennial involved in the system and the management practices plays a major role in influencing the biomass level, carbon storage, C0₂ mitigation potential and total carbon sequestration (in trees) of 70.59 tha^-1,21.38 tha^-1,116.29 tha^-1 and 18.53 t C ha^-1 in system S, followed by 68.53 tha^-1, 20.63 tha^-1,113.03 tha^-1 and 17.601 C ha^-1 in system S₄, respectively. It was also observed that all the agroforestry systems can sequester more carbon as compared to sole agricultural land use systems. It was also observed that Populus deltoides + wheat and Populus deltoides + lemon grass under block plantation have the maximum potential to sequester carbon than the boundary plantations of Populus deltoides and Eucalyptus hybrid.

Abstract

Chlorophytum borivilianum family Liliaceae a traditionally rare Indian medicinal herb used in the treatment of many clinical conditions is now threatened species worldwide due to over harvesting. The tubers are rich in alkaloids, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, steroids, saponins and polysaccharide, etc. found in tropical moist and dry deciduous forests. The decreasing supply from the natural resources and increasing demand in national and international markets requires prompt domestication and cultivation of medicinal plants, especially high value medicinal plants is creating new dimension in the field of agriculture. Hence, there is a strong need to understand the current scenario of its cultivation, description and its new medicinal properties
