Abstract

Experiments were conducted to standardize appropriate potting medium for raising Dalbergia sissoo seedlings under ischolar_main trainer seedling production system. In two different experiments , two kinds of potting media were tried , one with various combinations of sand , soil and compost and the other with charcoal , rice husk and compost. A multivariate approach was adopted considering the seedling quality parameters i.e. sturdiness , ischolar_main shoot ratio , ratio of fibrous/total ischolar_main biomass , Dickson quality index , and ischolar_main surface area , apart from the various growth and biomass traits of 3 month nursery growth. Dalbergia sissoo being a versatile and primary coloniser in riverine concession , came up very well in sand and compost combination (20% sand + 80% compost). However , it also performed well in other combinations of sand , soil and compost in the ratio of 1:1:3 ,1:0:4 and pure compost alone. In respect to the organic ingredients , combinations of charcoal , compost and rice husk in the ratio of 1:3:1 and 1:4:0 appeared satisfactory. Comparing the performance of both the types of potting media , it came to the notice that the sand , soil and compost combinations are fairly better for raising D. sissoo than the charcoal , rice husk and compost. The seedlings achieved significantly better growth , biomass and quality parameters when raised in sand , soil and compost than when raised in the potting mixture containing charcoal and rice husk. For the species like Dalbergia sissoo which is known to be a species of sandy alluvium soil , the ingredients like sand , soil and compost should be encouraged in the potting medium for raising in nursery.

Abstract

Seedling quality is a key factor in the success of any tree plantation programme, which ultimately depends upon the ischolar_main system. Root trainers are increasingly being used to deal with the problem of ischolar_main coiling and distortion commonly encountered in polybag grown seedlings. Due to the lack of species specific results for Indian conditions and species, ischolar_main trainers are still at the initial stage of use in Indian nurseries. In the present investigation, a multivariate approach has been adopted to find out the right size/volume and type of ischolar_main trainer for raising Dalbergia sissoo seedlings in the nursery. Root trainers of various type and cell sizes like Hiko trays 90 cc, 150 cc, 300 cc, Book type 200 cc and single cell bullet type 290 cc were tried and the growth and biomass production of D. sissoo seedlings in 3 months time period was studied. The quality parameters of seedlings in various treatments were figured out. The seedlings raised under different size and type of ischolar_main trainers were also observed in the field for two consecutive years. Though the Hiko tray 300 cc cell volume scored maximum points in respect of seedling quality parameters upto the nursery stage, field performance of Hiko tray 150 cc volume was found the best. The Hiko tray 150 cc cell volume raised seedlings achieved maximum plant height and collar diameter after field planting although the performance of Hiko tray 300 cc and 150 cc cell volume was statistically at par in respect offield survival. The results have indicated that though the nursery stage growth performance has scored maximum points in respect of Hiko tray 300 cc cell volume due to greater space available for the ischolar_main system, the field performance of 150 cc volume is significantly better than the 300 cc one. Thus the Hiko tray 150 cc volume is the best size/volume and type of ischolar_main trainer for raising D. sissoo seedlings in nursery. The Hiko tray 300 cc volume comes out in the second category.

Abstract

Root trainers are increasingly being used to deal with the problems of ischolar_main coiling and distortion, common to the polythene bag planting system. Experimental seedlings of three multipurpose tree species namely Acacia nilotica, Albizia procera and Dalbergia sissoo were raised in ischolar_main trainers (150 cc Hiko pots) in a randomized block design. The seedlings were assessed for quality parameters, viz. Sturdiness quotient, ischolar_main-shoot ratio, ratio of secondary + tertiary ischolar_main biomass to the total ischolar_main biomass and number of nodules. The quality of experimental seedlings was compared with seedlings raised in polythene bags kept on mounted angle iron beds. Root trainer raised seedlings were found to be better in sturdiness whereas seedlings raised in polythene bags showed higher nodulation. The results of the other two quality parameters assessed were comparable. No conclusive results could be drawn on the superiority of the two systems, whieh however, is possible once the seedlings are assessed for growth and survival after two to three years of fields planting.

However, the technology has not been standardized for most of the tropical tree species. In a multivariate investigation involving 5 type of ischolar_main trainers namely Hiko pots 90 cc, 150 cc, 300 cc, Book type 200 cc, and Single cell bullet type 290 cc, growth performance of Acacia nilotica seedlings was assessed on the basis of seedling quality parameters. The performance of the seedlings was also assessed in the field for two years.The seedlings raised in 300 cc Hiko pots performed the best in nursery as well as in the field. However, the performance of Hiko tray 150 cc cell volume and Single cell 290 cc appeared statistically equal with the Hiko tray 300 cc cell volume after two years field performance of seedlings. The results are indicative that, though Hiko trays 300 cc cell volume is the best size and type of ischolar_main trainer for A. nilotica, however, when there is a space constraint in nursery and the objective is to raise more number of seedlings per unit area of the nursery space, the Hiko tray 150 cc volume is equally good.

Abstract

The containerized seedling production technology , especially the ischolar_main trainers , is dependent upon suitable growing media for raising quality seedlings in nurseries. Due to lack of species specific results for Indian conditions and species , the use of ischolar_main trainers is still in the initial stage. In the present investigation , experiments were carried out to findout the proper combination of sand , soil , compost and combinations of charcoal , rice husk and compost as a organic medium , to be used as growing media under ischolar_main trainers for raising A. nilotica seedlings. The growth , biomass production of Acacia nilotica seedlings in 3 months period was studied and the quality parameters of seedlings raised in various treatments (Potting mixture combinations) were figured out. In respect of sand , soil and compost , combination of sand and compost in the ratio of 1:4 (20% sand + 80% compost) produced the best results and scored maximum points in respect of quality parameters. Testing the organic ingredients , combination of charcoals and compost in the ratio of 1:4 (20% charcoal + 80% compost) was another good growing medium. Thus two potting mixtures with different ingredients were standardized. The results on use of pure compost as a potting medium were not very much appreciable. The compost is required to be supplemented with 20% charcoal or 20% sand for making it more effective in raising Acacia nilotica seedlings. Improper choice of potting mixture may result in poor quality seedling production in nurseries.

Abstract

A trial was carried out to study the effect of polybag size and number of perforations at the bottom on different seedling growth and quality parameters in case of Albizia procera seedlings raised on Mounted Angle Iron beds. Highly significant differences in seedling growth parameters viz., height, collar diameter, length oftap ischolar_main, ischolar_main and shoot biomass, and seedling quality parameters viz. sturdiness, ischolar_main/shoot ratio, number of nodules and ratio of secondary + tertiary ischolar_main biomass to total ropot biomass, were observed among different treatments. The treatment T₃ (Polybag size 23 x 11 cm with 4 perforations at bottom) performed the best in respect of seedling growth parameters with height 81.33 cm, collar diameter 0.76 cm, length of tap ischolar_main 16.90 cm, shoot biomass 14.36 gm and ischolar_main biomass 11.67 gm. However the treatment T12(Polybag size U x 6 cm with 6 perforations at bottom) recorded best values for most of the seedling quality parameters viz. sturdiness 82.03, ischolar_main/shoot ratio 1.21 and ratio of secondary + tertiary ischolar_main biomass to the total ischolar_main biomass 0.44.

Abstract

Polybag raised seedlings have many disadvantages viz., ischolar_main coiling and distortion, scanty lateral ischolar_main development and frequent shifting operations. To deal with the problem, Mounted Angle Iron (MAI) beds have been designed. Polybags with perforations at the bottom are placed on these beds. The tap ischolar_main is expected to get exposed through the perforations and air-pruned leading to development of fibrous ischolar_main system. A trial was carried out to compare the performance of polybag seedlings of Albizia procera S₁, Acacia nilotica S₂, Sesbania grandiflora S₃. And Sesbania sesban S₄., raised on MAI beds with those raised on nursery beds. The observations suggest that the seedlings raised on MAI beds recorded higher fibrous ischolar_main biomass i.e.I.08g, 0.79g, O.94g and 0.82g per plant as compared to 0.49g, 0.30g, 0.36g and 0.30g of control (nursery bed seedlings) for S₁, S₂, S₃. and S₄. respectively; and number of nodules i.e. 75.3, 20.6, 55.2 and 52.9 as compared to 24.5, 9.3, 25.4 and 11.5 in control for S₁, S₂, S₃. And S₄ respectively. In case of ischolar_main length, leaf biomass and primary ischolar_main biomass, the nursery bed raised seedlings recorded higher values for all the four species. No difference was observed in case of seedling height, collar diameter, stem, biomass and total biomass. The improved polybagseedlings production system has enhanced the quality parameters of seedlings i.e. fibrosity and nodulation.

Abstract

Number of ischolar_mains (47/seedling) and number of nodules (131/seedling) as compared to 0.84 gm./seedling, 31/seedling and 29/seedIing respectively, in nursery bed raised polybag seedlings. In case of ischolar_main length and primary ischolar_main biomass, the nursery bed raised seedlings recorded significantly higher values of 47.2 cm and 3.10 gm dry wt/seedling respectively as compared to 22.5 cm and 2.22 gm/seedling respectively in seedlings raised on MAI beds. No significant differenec was observed in case of seedling height, collar diameter, leaf biomass and total biomass. The improved polybags seedling production system has significantly enhanced the quality parameters of Dalbergia sissoo seedlings i.e. fibrosity and nodulation.

Abstract

Coppicing experiment was conducted in different sizes of diameter classe. 0-2 cm, 2.1 cm to 4 cm and 4.1 cm to 6 cm in Eucalyptur terelicarnis in ten year old plantation The average number of coppice shoot thrown by the stump of all the diameter classes was nearly equal. The height and diameter of coppice shoot was significantly higher In the stumps of larger diameter. The results will therefore have a far reaching effect on the management and exploitation of coppice regeneration and rotation of Eucalyptus teretlcornis plantalion in various parts of the State.

Abstract

The present investigation was undertaken on 15 year old (1969) and 5 year old (1979) plants of Eucalyptus camoldulensis Dehn raised on the area of Regional Forest Research Centre, Jabalpur. The entire area of planlation was divided in 5 equal compartments. Five trees from each compartment were randomly selected and felled for aboveground and belowground biomass studies. Growlh parameters in 15 year old plantation were 2-4 times that of plants in 5 year old plantations. The ischolar_main length was traced to a depth of less than 3 m in all cases. However, the lateral spread was unimaginably very vast. The mean lateral spread of 20.3 m was observed in 15 year old plants and 9.01 m in 5 year old plants. The propaganda against Eucalyptus that it is responsible for drying-up of underground water reserVe is thus disproved from these studies. These Vast lateral ischolar_main system, may be responsible to utilise even the slighest amount of surface moisture which may be available just below the surface in any form of precipitation. In terms of mean annual productivIty it was 15.92 t/h/year in 15 year old plants and 6.03 t/h year in 5 year old plants. The maximum contribution to the total aboveground biomass has been observed by stemwood in both plantations.
