Assuming the importance of Papilionaceous plants in improving the habitat conditions in the highly degraded vegetations attempt has been made to record such plants growing naturally ill semiarid and chiefly red-lateritic soils of Sambalpur District of Orissa. As much as 62 such species has been recored growing naturally in this tract. The phenology of the plants along with its nodulation has also been collected. Silvo-pasture practice is carried out in laterite tracts of South West Bengal. Adoption of this practice helps in increasing yield of fodder in the pinch period of the year as well as helps in soil and water conservation. Among the various fodder species tried Stylogenthus guinansis CV Schofield has shown promise to its maximum extent. Though practice is showing promise but the farmers in most of the areas are not interested for cut and carry method of feeding in view of maintenance of low productive cows. So, the reduction of unproductive cows and maintenance of high yielding cattle will facilitate the adoption of stall feeding and the practice of silvo-pasture will be popular.Full Text

Agro-forestry in the form of Taungya is practiced in West Bengal since sixties of last century. With the changing situation, the practice once developed to raise the plantation economically in the forest areas has became one of the important tool for rural development. Some research works have beeD carried out to pvolve optimum spacing, crop combination, three tier cropping system, sequential cropping, mechanisation etc. An account of the same is given in the present paper. Presently large scale inter-cultivation is being carried out in forest areas to generate employment and production. Soaking of bamboo seeds (Dendrocalamus Strictus L.) in water or a dilute solution of disodium hydrogen phosphate (l0-1M) for 6 hr, followed in either case by drying back, greatly reduced their deterioration under accelerated ageing at 92% RH and 40°C for 5 days. Hydration by moisture equilibration with a water saturated atmosphere for 48 hr followed by drying also slowed down the loss of vigour and viability of seeds. Soaking-drying treatment was, however, more effective than the moisture equilibration-drying treatment. Although the soaking-drying treatment with low concentratlon of disodium hydrogen phosphate (10-4M) proved better than water (SD) for maintaining vigour and viabilily, GA treatment showed better seedling growth (not germination percentage) than the other treatments. Tavngya plantation in North Bengal is an age-old practice. It has two principal aspects, (i) a dependable planting technique and (ii) readily available and dependable labour force from the conventional forest villages. As the pace of conversion of high forest into plantation has increased considerably, maintenance of the conventional forest villages in usual pattern has become uneconomic. Hence the conventional forest villages cannot be retained for a length of time. In future, forest workers may be drawn from a different kind of forest villages. There is also a visible drift of rural population towards urban areas due to more covetable employment in the various industries. Large scale harvesting depending primarily on manual labour is no longer possible because of the large areas under operation. The obvious course is to go over to mechanisation in the different stages of forestry operations and with this end in view, certain works are being done by tractors and various implements. The aim is to harvest economically and quickly, and to carry out subsequent ploughing of the land for taungya plantation.
