Abstract

A nursery trial of Cedrus deodara and Pinus halepensis with nine different sowing dates spread over autumn, winter and spring was conducted during 2002-2003. Germination in case of Cedrus deodara was better where seeds were sown in the month of February, but in Pinus halepensis sowing dates did not affect the germination up to 1st February. Survival percentage of seedlings was more in seeds sown in the first fortnight of February. Time taken for completion of germination decreased as sowing proceeded from autumn to spring. Except for diameter in Pinus halepensis seedling development in terms of height and diameter was also better in seeds sown in the first fortnight of February. Thus in order to get good germination, better survival and reduce nursery expenditure seeds should be sown in the nursery in the first fortnight of February (winter) instead of sowing seeds in the autumn season. Development of seedlings is also better in case seeds are sown in February (winter).

Abstract

Traditional agroforestry systems were identified for the first time in the Kashmir Valley as till date no work was reported from the area in the field. Agroforestry systems identified were boundary plantations, Agri-silviculture, Horti-silviculture, Horti-pasture, Horti-silviagriculture and Kitchen gardens. A broad evaluation of the systems show that only three tree species i.e. Populus deltoides, Salix alba and Robinia pseudoacacia are extensively planted. Adequate representation of all the components is lacking in the systems and in some of the models tree component is far less and utilization of space in these systems is not efficient, besides the yield of agricultural crops is also less. Thus there is a need to make the models viable by the intervention of scientific agroforestry which need to be devised for the areas.

Abstract

Socio-economic aspects of Agroforestry are evaluated in the present study. People in the study area plant only three tree species i.e. Populus deltoides, Salix alba and Robinia pseudoacacia under Agroforestry systems, which are not scientifically efficient and so people do not meet their requirements of food, fodder and fuel wood for full year from these models. In order to make the models efficient and productive and generate interest in scientific models energies need to be diverted for on farm experiments so that people can judge by themselves performance of scientific models, which in turn will go a long way in fulfilling the requirements of farmers to a great extent. Models devised should be socially acceptable and economically feasible so that they are adopted without much resistance.

Abstract

Laboratory study was conducted on one year seeds of Fraxinus floribunda during August 2006. In order to over come poor and slow germination due to dormancy, the seeds were first moistened for 48 hours for imbibition and thereafter subjected to (warm, cold and warm + cold) stratifications ranging from 1 to 4 week duration. Seeds thereafter were put to germination test in petri plates on germination paper at 20 ± 2°C in seed germinator. Germination was recorded after 7 days and continued till 30^th day. Results obtained indicated that F. floribunda has intermediate physiological dormancy and the same can be over come by cold stratification for a period of 4 weeks. Germination per cent, mean germination time and germination value were 78%, 16.42 days and 26.67 respectively after 4 weekofcoldstratification.

Abstract

The paper presents a study on the growth behavior of two poplar species namely Populus deltoides and Populus nigra by giving different doses of fertilizer. The results indicate that N₁₅₀ P ₁₂₀ M₂₀ is the best dose for Populus deltoides and N₁₅₀ P _{120 M10} is the best dose for Populus nigra for obtaining optimum height. Individually phosphorus and Nitrogen increases the height and diameter of both the species but there is no effect of fertilizer on ischolar_main-shoot ratio and number of ischolar_mains/plant in both the species.

Abstract

Cupressus torulosa and Cedrus deodara attain optimum shoot and ischolar_main development when grown in open nursery in beds while as seedlings grown in polypacks do not exhibit better growth in terms of height and ischolar_main development. Roots of polypack seedlings show even deformities and confinement in immediate vicinity.

Abstract

This experiment was aimed to study the genetic diversity among twenty half-sib progenies of Madhuca indica belonging to different places of Allahabad (U.P), India. Seeds of 20 candidate plus trees were sown in greenhouse and open field environments with a view to assess the impact of two different environments on the expression of genetic diversity using Non-hierarchical Euclidean cluster analysis. Superior tree progenies were grouped into five clusters under green house as well as field environments. Families of plus trees S₂ and S₁₄ formed same groups in different clusters. Inter-cluster distance was found to be highest between cluster III and V, both under green house and field environment. Higher values of inter and intra cluster distance in field environment as compared to green house environment may be attributed to greater environmental differences, revealing their genetic closeness from high to medium. Leaf area followed by seedling height contributed maximum to the total divergence and played a prominent role in creating the genetic diversity.
