Physical and mechanical properties in green and kiln dry conditions, of small clear specimens of Acacia melanoxylon from Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, obtained from 9 logs have been reported in the paper. The results so obtained have been compared with standard teak (Tectona grandis). Estimated values of different properties calculated from strength specific gravity formulae have been reported and compared with observed values in green condition. Safe working stresses and tentative suitability indices have also been reported and compared with the corresponding values of teak.- A Note on the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Canarium strictum Roxb. Easto-plastic materia1 like wood and wood products exhibit variation in the basic mechanical properties due to size and shape of the test specimen. Effect of span-depth ratio is a very impartant factor, because it has got a marked influence on the mechanical properties in bending tests. In the present study an attempt has been made to study the effect of span depth ratio on the mechanical properties viz. "Modulus of rupture" and "Modulus of elasticity" in bending of different qualities of commercial particle boards. It has been observed in general that optimum condition in all the cases is reached at aboat a span-depth ratio or 02, and beyond which the result are likely to be lower.- Wooden Floor for the Squash Court at New Forest

Study of variation of Izod values with temperature on standard specimens of seven species has been made and straight line equations by the method of least squares has been suggested for each of the species separately for purely practical purposes. Previous work in the field and the present data have been discussed. Slight increase of Izod values with increase of temperature at moisture content well above the fibre saturation point with a possible critical value between 70°C. and 90°C. has been observed.- Studies on Strength of Bamboos: a Note on its Mechanical Behaviour

Variation from pith to periphery in specific gravity, fibre stress at elastic limit, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and maximum crushing stress (Compression Parallel to grain) for the species Cedrus deodara (deodar), Dipterocarpus grandiflorus (gurjan), Machilus macrantha (Machilus), Pinus roxburghii (chir), Shorea robusta (sal) and Tectona grandis (teak) were studied. In general it was found that in conformity with other workers the strength increases with distance from the pith but near the periphery it again decreases. However there were certain exceptions. Variations in strength of the material due to North, East, South and West directions were also studied but no significant differences were observed.- Investigation on Strength Properties of the Species of Genus Gardenia

Shorea robusta (sal) occurs widely in several parts of the country and is used for numerous purposes. In the present paper the available data on Physical and Mechanical properties of sal in "green" and "air-dry" condition from 14 different localities of India obtained from test results of 5 logs from 5 different trees selected from each locality, has been presented in metric units alongwith the growth conditions. The data of some selected important properties, viz., Fibre stress at Elastic limit, Modulus of rupture, Modulus of Elasticity, Crushing Stress, Hardness and Height of drop in Impact bending have been analysed to study the influence of locality of growth and variation of strength of above properties from one locality to another have been evaluated and discussed. On the basis of investigations, it has been observed that strength properties vary from locality to locality and the same (localities) have been roughly classified into three groups yielding significantly different quality of wood.- A Note on Strength Adjustment for Moisture Content in Wood
