Abstract

A study was conducted on a sum of 100 adolescent (11-13 yrs) girls, randomly selected with the objective to assess the food habits and food preferences among adolescent girls. The collection of data was done through interview schedules and dietary survey methods. The schedule follows preference test of seven point hedonic scale. The study reveals that 56 per cent girls were vegetarian , 31 per cent girls were non-vegetarian and 13 per cent girls were eggetarian. From the study it was clear that commercial food products were an instant hit among the upcoming generation showing the preference sequence of is like very much (40.2%), like moderately (28.75%), like extremely (28%), neither like nor dislike (4.65%), dislike moderately (0.00%), dislike very much (0.00%) and dislike extremely (0.00 %).

Abstract

The study was performed as per the following objectives to assess the nutritional awareness related to dietary practices, to develop a film strip for nutrition education of selected tribal adolescent girls and to determine the gain in nutritional knowledge of selected adolescent girls through the developed film strip. For the present study adolescent girls of (13-16 years) were selected and divided into two groups, group A consisting of (13-14 years) age and group B consisting (15-16 years) age from 'Doman Dih' village of 'Rahe' block, 'Ranchi' district, state Jharkhand (N=60). The film strip entitled "LADKIYON MAIN POSHAN" was developed for providing the nutritional information and knowledge to the adolescent girls regarding the importance of iron, vitamin A, iodine and their role in our body. In the present study, the nutritional status of adolescent girls and the impact of communication methods on their knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) were studied as pre-exposure data and post-exposure data. There was the positive impact of the film strip shown, as all the results showed significant p ≤ 0.5 which means the nutrition education imparted was fruitfully conducted and knowledge was gained in a better way. About 21.7 per cent of the respondents knew about balanced diet and after imparting nutrition education it raised to 66.7 per cent, 58.3 per cent of the respondents knew about the sources of calcium and after the film strip which was shown, it rose to 86.6 per cent, 66.7 per cent of the respondents knew about the deficiency of anaemia and after providing nutrition education, it rose to 78.3 per cent. 38.3 of the respondents knew about vitamin A but after providing nutrition education, it rose to 56.7 per cent. Knowledge level scores of the respondents was also increased after providing nutrition education, 3.3 per cent of the respondents scored very good and after providing nutrition education, it raised to 51.7 per cent. About 11.7 per cent of the respondents scored good and after providing nutrition education, it rose to 26.6 per cent which showed a positive impact of the adolescent girls towards knowledge.

Abstract

Jaundice is a common problem in medical and surgical gastroenterological practice. Its cause can often be correctly anticipated clinically but usually investigations are required for confirmation. It could be because of a variety of causes and is less commonly seen outside the gastroenterology and hepatobiliary surgery. Information on the prevalence of jaundice in the inhabitants of four hospitals namely Chiranjeev, Chinmay, Vaishnavi and Janki was very scanty. For the collection of information, 400 patients were assessed in which 60 patients were selected randomly in which 66.67 per cent were male and 33.33 per cent were female. The main objectives of the study were to find out the prevalence, their nutritional status and dietary pattern. In present study, the serum bilirubin level was assessed for the confirmation of the jaundice in patients. The different types of test relevant to jaundice were also assessed. The findings of the study showed that out of 60 patients (100%), 58(98%) patients had the serum bilirubin level in the range of 1.0 to 5.0 mg/dl which showed mild symptoms and 2 (2%) patients had the serum bilirubin level in the range of more than 10.0 mg/dl which showed severe symptoms in the patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Complementary feeding practices have a significant impact on life from childhood to adulthood. It is important to understand the practices followed to bring about policy changes. The study aims to assess complementary feeding practices among the tribal population of North-East India.

Material and Method: A community-based, cross sectional study was conducted among 820 pairs of mother and child in two North-Eastern states of India, using a pre-tested questionnaire based in Infant and Young Child feeding Guidelines.

Results: In the study it was seen that, majority of the study population (73.7%) followed timely introduction of complementary feeding. The type of food commonly used as introductory food were rice (62.8%) and commercial infant formulae (18.66%). Infant and Young Child Feeding indicators such as intake of Minimum Diet Diversity (32.2%), and Minimum acceptable diet (30.85%) were found to be inadequate except for Minimum meal frequency where it was found to be on the higher side at 93.8%.

Conclusion: The feeding practices were found to be unhealthy. It is recommended more intensive awareness generation activities along with emphasis on diverse dietary intake be taken up to improve health literacy to bring about a conducive environment for holistic the growth and development of the individual, society and nation as a whole.

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder which is a prevalent global public health problem associated with compelling morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic burden. This disorder can be prevented and treated if diagnosed early and accurately. This study was conducted among the pre and post-menopausal women of Allahabad District aged between 35-65 years to observe the strength of association between the risk factors and the prevalence of osteoporosis. A total number of 316 respondents were screened through P-DEXA scan in a hospital based free BMD check-up camps and a WHO guideline for the diagnosis of osteoporosis was used to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis in the selected respondents. Diagnosed patients of osteoporosis were identified as cases (N=84) while controls (N=84) of the study were free from less bone mineral density. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect information regarding behavioral, Anthropometric, Clinical and genetic risk factors of the osteoporosis.The finding shows that 27.22 percent women were normal while 46.2 percent had osteopenia and 26.58 percent had osteoporosis. The study shows the strong association of different risk factors like lack of physical activity (OR= 3.003), high consumption of tea/coffee (OR=1.437), less exposure to sun light (OR=2.608), obesity (OR=1.3125), large body frame (OR=1.313), poor hand grip strength (OR=1.819), prior history of fracture (OR=2.426) and maternal history of fracture (OR=7.604) with the prevalence of osteoporosis. This study recommended a healthy life style pattern in the daily life as osteoporosis is highly preventable disease and most of the associated risk factors are modifiable.
