Modern Power Systems are growing fast with more generators, transformers and large network in the systems. The installation, running and maintenance costs of the power system equipment are more. Whenever a fault occurs, there is a need for the protection of these systems. Power System Protection is a branch of electrical power engineering that deals with the protection of electrical power systems from faults through the isolation of faulted parts from the rest of the electrical network. Superconductors are one of the last great frontiers of scientific discovery. Here, in this paper we discuss the use of Super Conductors as protective devices for Surge Current Protection. Superconductors conduct electricity offering zero resistance below certain temperatures. We study different types of super conductor fault current limiters and their working.

Battery-electric vehicles and grid-connected hybrid vehicles rely on the power grid for energy – they have to plug in to charge their batteries. With power alerts and blackouts a recent reality, it is easy to conclude that the energy requirements of grid-connected electric vehicles will make the energy crisis worse. Actually, quite the opposite may be true. With a bi-directional grid power interface, virtually any vehicle that can plug into the grid can potentially provide beneficial support to the grid.
Battery electric vehicles can support the grid exceptionally well by providing any of a number of functions known collectively as ancillary services. These services are vital to the smooth and efficient operation of the power grid. A hybrid vehicle can provide ancillary services, and can also generate power. Fuel cells are already being commercialized for small stationary power sources, so a vehicle mounted fuel cell could also serve as a vehicle-to-grid power source. Sharing power assets between transportation and power generation functions can create compelling new economics for electrically-propelled vehicles.

This paper focuses on performances of different inverter topologies. Inverters are used in a large number of power applications. The function of an inverter is to convert DC power to AC; these are referred to as Voltage Source Inverters (VSI). VSI are divided up into three categories: Pulse-width Modulated Inverters, and Square-wave Inverters. The PWM inverters are classified in to Single PWM inverter, Sinusoidal PWM inverters, Space Vector PWM inverters and Third Harmonic Injection Technique. Pulse-width modulation inverters take in a constant dc voltage. Diode-rectifiers are used to rectify the line voltage, and the inverter must control the magnitude and the frequency of the ac output voltages. To do this the inverter uses pulse-width modulation using its switches. Square-wave inverters have their input connected to a controlled dc voltage in order to control the magnitude of the output ac voltage. The inverter only controls the frequency of the output where the input voltage is controlled the magnitude. The output ac voltage has a waveform similar to a square wave which is where the inverter got its name.Full Text

Induction generators are increasingly being used in nonconventional energy systems such as wind, micro/mini hydro, etc. The advantages of using an induction generator instead of a synchronous generator are well known. Some of them are reduced unit cost and size, ruggedness, brushless (in squirrel cage construction), absence of separate dc source, ease of maintenance, self-protection against severe overloads and short circuits, etc. In isolated systems, squirrel cage induction generators with capacitor excitation, known as self-excited induction generators (SEIGs), are very popular. This paper presents the process of self-excitation and voltage buildup, characteristics of RLC load.

The aim of designing a conventional inverter is to convert dc to ac output with controlled voltage magnitude, variable frequency and with negligible harmonic content. Sinusoidal PWM technique though is a solution has disadvantages like poor D.C bus utilization and difficult to implement digitally. When compared with other modulating techniques, Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation relatively provides less harmonic content, effective utilization of dc bus, and complete digital implementation by a single chip microprocessor. Due to the advantages SVM has increasing applications in power converters and motor control.
This paper aims to analyze the performances of SVPWM controlled 2-level inverter by evaluating T.H.D, D.F and L.O.H using MATLAB.
