- Antioxidant Activity of Geraniol on n-Nitrosodiethylamine-induced Hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar Albino Rats

The chemopreventive effect of Geraniol was evaluated in N-nitrosodiethylamine-induced experimental liver tumor in Wistar albino rats. In this study the animals were divided into four groups with 6 rats each and received treatments for 4 weeks. Group I served as control (untreated), Group II treated with N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN) (200 mgkg, i.p.) and Phenobarbital (PB) (0.05%) in drinking water; Group III received Geraniol (250 mg/kg b.wt) in addition to DEN and Group IV treated with Geraniol only for four weeks. The administration of Geraniol in rats with DEN induced HCC rats (Group III) shows a significantly reduced level of liver serum marker (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, gammaglutamyl transpeptidase, alpha fetoprotein and 5'nucleotidase). These results are evident that Geraniol possesses protective effect against N-Nitrosodiethylamine (DEN)-induced Hepatocellular Carcinogenesis (HCC).Keywords

- A Study on the Effects of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) on Reaction Time in Healthy Young Adults

Background: Ascorbate (vitamin C) is a vital antioxidant molecule in the brain. Ascorbate is proposed as a neuromodulator of glutamatergic, dopaminergic, cholinergic and GABAergic transmission and related behaviours. Reaction time indicates processing capability of the central nervous system (speed and accuracy), and sensorymotor association, measuring attentiveness, alertness, and arousal of a person. The role of ascorbic acid in bringing about improvement of pathologically altered neural functioning is well eastablished. Whether vitamin C can further improve upon normal psychomotor functioning in healthy young person is what remains to be seen.
Aims: To evaluate the effect of ingestion of moderately large amount of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) on simple auditory and visual reaction time in young healthy subjects.
Settings and Design: Study involved 200 healthy young adults (age range 17-20 years) of whom 97 were males and 103 were females. The subjects were administered 1000 mg of vitamin C daily for 14 days. Simple visual and auditory reaction times were recorded using a reaction time apparatus (Response Analyzer YSRT 302) before and after administration of vitamin C for 14 days.
Results and Conclusion: Statistical analysis was done using paired 't' test. A significant improvement (P-value < 0.0001) was observed in both visual and auditory reaction times after administration of vitamin C. Males reacted significantly faster (P-value < 0.0001) than females to both auditory and visual stimuli. We conclude that ingestion of a moderately large amount of ascorbic acid brings about an improvement in the simple reaction time and hence ability to concentrate in healthy young individuals.

The effect of non-directive play therapy on development was examined among mentally challenged children in selected institutions of Coimbatore. The research design adopted for this study was Quasi-experimental, pre-test post-test control group design. Stratified random sampling was adopted to choose the sample. The population was divided into three strata based on the level of Intelligent Quotient (I.Q) such as mild, moderate and severe mental retardation. There was only one sample in the first strata and it was excluded from the study (mild). The second strata consist of 14 participants (moderate) and third strata consist of 2 participants (severe). On lottery method from each stratum, equal numbers of samples (8) were alternatively allocated to experimental and control group respectively. The developmental level of mentally challenged children was assessed using Developmental Delay Preschool Scale (American speech-language-hearing association 1983). Non-directive play therapy was imparted as an intervention for a period of 21 days. The post-test was conducted to assess the effect of non-directive play therapy using the same scale. Appropriate statistical technique was used to test the hypotheses. The findings reveal that there is a significant difference in the development between the experimental and control group after non- directive play therapy. Thus, the intervention was found to have an effect on the development of mentally challenged children.Keywords
