Alcoholism is a common addictive behavior among males, which is quite prevalent among young adults. Men are more likely to consume alcohol than women, and that too in higher amounts than women. Cognitive dysfunction/impairment is a common symptom of chronic alcohol usage which may range in its impact on daily functioning. Brief attention lapses and other minor failures of cognition are quite common among individuals. Alcohol may impact such cognitive failures which may get worsened with chronic or heavy alcohol use. It is worthwhile to see if cognitive failures increase due to higher level of alcoholism. The present study was designed to investigate the differences in everyday cognitive failures across three different levels/groups of alcoholism measured though Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST). Cognitive failures were measured with Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ). The results of t-test indicated that male alcoholics (n=100, 18-25 years) with no problems due to alcohol usage scored significantly lower on CFQ as compared to mild problematic and problem drinkers. The groups of early/mild problem drinkers did not differ from problem drinkers (alcoholics) on scores of CFQ. The study concludes that higher levels of alcohol dependence lead to more cognitive failures. The implications and future recommendations are discussed.Keywords

In most of the studies among youth, relationships between temperament and depression were investigated with a primary focus on impact of the negative emotionality (NE) dimension of temperament. The present study aims to understand the problem whether positive emotionality (PE) also plays any significant role in associations with depressive symptoms. In a convenience sample of 106 non-clinical youth (1118 years; M = 15.28, SD = .89) and 87 clinical youth (1118 years; M = 16.37, SD = .96), data was collected onNE and PE using Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children (HiPIC) and depressive symptoms using Child Behavior Checklist for children ages 6-18 years (CBCL). Findings indicated that high levels of NE and low levels of PE were both related with more number of depressive symptoms. It was also found that the interaction of PE and NE was significantly associated to depressive symptoms, with lower PE levels being a significant vulnerability factor, which facilitates the association between higher NE levels and depressive symptoms. Present study findings determine the need of identifying factors of resilience for depression among youth. Insight into these factors is necessary for the successful development and appropriate implementation of prevention strategies and effective intervention programs for depressive symptoms.Keywords

Slope failures in mines pose a serious concern, resulting in fatalities and significant damage to infrastructure and equipment. Despite their complexities, the majority of these slope behaviours are predictable. Mining firms worldwide have long worked on preventing mine slope failures because of the potential for human and material casualties. As a result, various investigations and studies have been done to understand these phenomena and their progression better. In this research, an automated technique is developed to track displacement data and identify the onset of slope failure, which is also the onset of acceleration. A five-step process is employed for a specific dataset. When the analysis produces a positive result for a particular set of slope monitoring data, the slope is accelerating. It helps us to determine the beginning of the slope’s acceleration. The generated output may be used as an early warning system that forecasts slope failures to avert potentially catastrophic slope occurrences, boosting overall mining performance and safety standards.Keywords

The collapse of a mining slope can be predicted. Time is crucial, and forecasting slope failures has long been a major risk management concern for mining firms across the world. Forecasting the time of mine slopes collapse is a challenging but necessary job to control its impact on life and property. A good forecast of slope failure events allows mine management to analyse the situation and then implement an action response plan to minimise the effects of the failure on lives, machinery, and production. Predicting a slope failure starts with slope monitoring. Lately, numerous techniques based on monitoring and analysing displacement data have been used to anticipate the failure of mining slopes. Recent developments have opened new prospects for applying mine slope monitoring and failure prediction techniques. The main objective of this review article is to discuss and classify the slope monitoring and failure prediction techniques. This article has the potential to support mine management in understanding and applying these techniques better.Keywords

The polishing of freeform surfaces finds applications in a variety of niche areas where the surface characteristics have a defining impact on functional capabilities of the product. Pneumatically Configurable Polishing (PCP) is a recent addition to the available technologies which can generate surface finish of nanometric scales on freeform surfaces. The manipulative ease and determinism in polishing force control offered by the PCP process allow it to finish complex surface profiles in a highly repeatable way. The automation code for a CNC PCP machine-tool is developed to ensure the accuracy in the finished parts being produced. The machine code for CNC interpolation and the parametric process control have been carried out in the Parker Automation Manager software. The user interface has been designed and deployed using the JMobile HMI software. The PAM Visualization allows the user defined part program to be loaded in the controller from an external removable disk. The exchange of tags and process variables between the controller and HMI has been done using the OPC UA platform. A part program created using a CAM software is employed to finish a sample workpiece. The developed CNC machine code is successfully tested and evaluated for its functional performance and process repeatability.

The present study pertains to a compliant polishing technique called Pneumatically Configurable Polishing (PCP) which uses the precise inflation of a thin elastomeric diaphragm or membrane using pneumatic pressure for generating nano level surface finish on substrate surfaces. The PC polishing tool which has a cup shape is made to contact the workpiece surface such that its flexible nature can adapt itself to the macro features on the workpiece. This inflated tool-work contact leads to the entrapment of the hard abrasives preplaced in the interface zone in the form of a slurry. The rotary motion of the tool along with the relative motion between the workpiece and tool, help to generate an improved surface finish in the interface area. The area of the finishing zone is an important outcome of the polishing regime because it defines the dimensions of the area which will be affected by the tool. It also helps to estimate the time needed for polishing a large area. Also, the force transmitted to the workpiece surface is an important measure to estimate the functional life of the tool. In the current study, the variation of the spot size and total normal force are modelled mathematically in terms of the physical and geometrical properties of the tool as well as the applied fluid pressure. The Hertz theory of contact is used to model the contact conditions in the polishing interface zone. The model studies the effect of pneumatic pressure on membrane inflation and its influence on the area of the polishing spot at varying working gaps. The effect of the applied fluid pressure is studied on the normal force experienced by the workpiece, and the results obtained from the model are validated with experimental verification under identical polishing conditions. The values obtained experimentally show a close agreement with the theoretical results obtained from the model.
