- Effect of NPK Fertilizers on Chemical Constituents of Aloe vera Leaves

A field study was conducted in Aloe vera syn Aloe barbadensis with an objective to determine the effect of various levels of synthetic fertilizers (10:10:10: 20:20:20: 40:40:40: 80:80:80: N:P2O5:K2O kg/ha) on chemical constituents at the inflorescence stage of the plant (12 months old). The active principles were assessed from the gel (mucilaginous tissue of leaf) and juice (yellow exudate from the base of leaf). The results suggested that free o-glycones and o-glycosides were not affected by levels of NPK nutrients applied, but c-glycosides, anhydrous barbaloin and hydroxy anthroquinone derivatives were significantly affected with application of NPK fertilizers at 40:40:40 or 80:80:80 N:P2O5:K2O kg/ha. The recovery of total polysaccharides from gel ranged from 0.52% from control to 0.89% in 40:40:40 applied plots. Anhydrous barbaloin content estimated using HPLC technique and colorimetric methods were comparable Aloe emodin was found absent in all samples. Aloesin content ranged from 10.60 to 13.10% in Aloe juice and there was no significant difference across treatments. The recovery of Aloe juice ranged from 0.050 to 0.066% on dry weight basis.Keywords

- Antihyperglycemic Activity of the Various Extracts of Costus speciosus Rhizomes

Costus speciosus is known to possess antidiabetic properties and used in local health traditions in India but the validation of drug is not done. The activity of various fractions of drug is also not reported. In view of its immense potential in andiabetic properties, systematic study was conducted with an objective to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of petroleum ether, chloroform, methanolic, and aqueous extracts of C. speciosus rhizomes on over night fasted, Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Blood glucose level (BGL) monitored at 0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes suggested that all extracts of C. speciosus resulted in reduction of BGL significantly except pet ether extract. Aqueous extract and methanolic extracts reduced initial BGL of 387 to 120 mg/dl and 303 to 161 mg/ dl respectively at the end of 240 minutes. Similar studies conducted with oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) confirmed the above findings suggesting that aqueous extract and methanolic extracts of C. speciosus were highly effective in bringing down the BGL from 590 to 96 mg/dl and 570 to 128 mg/dl respectively at the end of 240 minutes, which was on par with the glibenclamide. Results from multiple dose studies wherein the drug was administered for 14 days also confirmed the above findings and the serum lipid profiles high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) were found to be optimum in aqueous or methanolic extracts on par with normal healthy rats or standard drug glibenclamide treated rats.Keywords

A study was carried out in 'Allahabad Safeda' guava (Psidium guajava L.) to standardize the effect of planting densities on growth parameters viz., scion girth, plant height, and spread (East - West and North - South), canopy area, canopy volume and fruit yield over a ten years period. The trial was laid out with five planting densities viz., 6x3, 6x4, 6x6, 8x4, 8x3m accommodating 555, 416, 277, 312 and 416 plants/ha respectively with four replications having sixteen plants per treatment in a randomized block design during 1988-89 season. The grafted plants on seedling ischolar_mainstock were planted and the yield data were recorded from 1992 to 1997. The results indicated that the scion girth was significantly higher in 8x3 or 8x4m configurations. There were no significant differences among treatments for plant height. The plant spread across East-West direction was however significant in 8x3m. The fruit yield in Mrig bahar was significantly higher as compared to that of Hasth bahar in terms of fruit number and weight. Land Use Index (LUI) values exceeding 50% had bearing on the productivity of different configurations. The productivity was nearly double in 6x3m where, the planting density was twice as much in recommended spacing (6x6m) by sixth year of planting after which, yield levels declined. Thus, it was concluded that a spacing of 6x3m having 555 plants/ha, gives the highest productivity in 'Allahabad Safeda' guava by sixth year of planting under North Coorg conditions.Keywords

Reduviid predators are the largest terrestrial bugs considered to be potential biocontrol agents and an integral part of integrated pest management (IPM). Despite the rich fauna of reduviids and their prey records, potential studies on reduviid are relatively meagre. Understanding the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the reduviid population is essential to exploit them as biocontol agents in agriculture. Hence the present study was aimed at determining the abundance of reduviid, Isyndus heros in an organic mango orchard and to determine the impact of abiotic factors on its occurrence. The peak population of reduviids was found during the initial flowering phase (January) and vegetative phase (September–December). Correlation matrix showed that there was a significant positive correlation of between the population of I. heros and relative humidity, and significant negative correlation between maximum and minimum temperatures. Further, the significant variables were regressed and the highest coefficient of determination was found in maximum temperature (R2 = 0.62) with a single weather factor. However, multiple regression analysis revealed that the maximum and minimum temperatures could explain the variability up to 49%. This forms a baseline for the conservation and augmentation of reduviids that can be utilized as potential biocontrol agents in IPM programmes.Keywords
