Abstract

Hydrodynamic characteristics of a liquid membrane permeation system for separation of toluene from a mixture of heptane and toluene were studied. The mass transfer coefficient was well correlated in terms of three dimensionless numbers: Sherwood, Schmidt and Reynolds. By using the correlation equation, a correction factor with respect to intrinsic permeation rate was evaluated from the experimental data under various non-ideal flow conditions.

Abstract

Effluent from milk processing unit contains soluble organics, suspended solids, and trace organics releasing gases, causing taste and odor, and imparting colour and turbidity produced as a result of high consumption of water from the manufacturing process, utilities and service section, chemicals, and residues of technological additives used in individual operations whichmakes it crucial matter to be treated for preserving the aesthetics of the environment. In this experimental study after determination of the initial parameters of the raw wastewater it was subjected to batch adsorption study using rice husk. The effects of contact time, initial wastewater concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, solution temperature and the adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic parameters were investigated. The phenomenon of adsorption was favoured at a lower temperature and lower pH in this case. Maximum removal as high as 92.5% could be achieved using an adsorbent dosage of 5 g/L, pH of 2, and temperature of 30°C. The adsorption kinetics and the isotherm studies showed that the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm were the best choices to describe the adsorption behavior. The thermodynamic parameters suggested that not only was the adsorption by rice husk spontaneous and exothermic in nature but also the negative entropy change indicated enthalpy driven process.

Abstract

The vibrant ecosystem of Sunderbans with its lush green mangrove forest, various types of aquatic species including many rare endemic flora and fauna, birds, crocodiles and the famous Royal Bengal Tiger is a unique Biosphere Reserve. Unfortunately such a productive ecosystem is now exposed to threats of extinction. Besides the natural global phenomena, the land degrading anthropogenic activity is one of the prime factors for this ecological decline. In a forest-society interface, unplanned over exploitation of natural resources is very common. In the case of Sunderbans also, as a result of continuously increasing population pressure almost half of the mangrove forest have been cut down to supply fuel wood, land reclamation for settlement and aquaculture and various other purposes. The situation has become precarious as there seems to be a striking imbalance between exploitation and replenishment, thereby making the ecosystem most fragile. Indiscriminate prawn seed collection, refuse and sewerage discharge from urban areas, spillage of toxic pollutants as well as trashes in the tourist spots of Sunderbans are other anthropogenic factors responsible for environmental degradation of the area. Suitable strategies for the conservation and maintenance of optimum ecological condition of this unique biodiversity have to be planned involving local people, Government and other social organizations.

Abstract

Soil properties of different location of Ganga and Matla are different depending on the flow of river along with its entire path. Soil and water property of both of these courses have been deteriorating due to release of agricultural run off, domestic sewage, indus­ trial effluents. The soil receives serious polluting substances through anthropogenic ac­tivities which include organic wastes, toxic chemicals, heavy metals from industrial efflu­ents etc.

This paper studies different soil properties of rivers Ganga and Matla of West Bengal to verify if the soils can be used as liner materials for the hazardous waste landfill.

Abstract

To protect ground w ater from landfill contam inants, soil liners are constructed as a simple liner which provide the finalline of defuse against groundwater contamina­tion in landfill. Clay minerals are the most important chemical weathering product of soil. The very low permeability of the clay barrier is expected to lengthen the lifetime of the landfill and slow down the consequent release of contaminants. It is observed from the experimental results that using soil as liner medium, the groundw ater con­tam ination of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, cobalt, copper can be reduced to 28 - 97% depending on the metal characteristics. A mathematical expression is developed depending on the experimental conditions and it is observed that the experimental result shows satisfactory agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract

Water quality of adjoining wetland ecosystem of Bidyadhari river basin gradually has been worsened due to admixture of industrial effluents with domestic sewage released from the Kolkata metropolis as well as from the different industries of Kolkata east through different canals. Pollutants from industrial sewage may cause biological magnification that ultimately leads to carcinogenic effect in the human body. Attempts are made to record some physico-chemical parameters from six different stations of Bidyadhari River It is now urgently needed for mapping of Bidyadhari river course through physicochemical parameters to let the local people know the water quality of Bidyadhari River in different sectors for their benefit in application of water of Bidyadhari River in agriculture and aquaculture.
