Abstract

A stochastic frontier production function is defined for panel data on firms in which the non-negative technical inefficiency effects are assumed to be a function of firm-specific variables. The inefficiency effects are assumed to be independently distributed as truncations of normal distributions with constant variance, but with means which are a linear function of observable variables. An empirical application of the model is obtained using up to ten years of data on tea gardens of Assam and West Bengal.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to identify the income poverty, income inequality and multidimensional poverty status of Bodo people residing in Udalguri district of Bodoland, Assam. The study is entirely conducted on the basis of the novel data collected through multistage stratified purposive random sampling technique from 327 Bodo households. Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) weighted poverty index, the Gini coefficient, Atkinson index and Multiple Correspondence Analyses are used to measure the income poverty, income inequality and multidimensional poverty, respectively. The results suggest that in terms of both FGT and MPI indicators, Bodos are self-sufficient, far from saying surplus, and there is lower inequality in the distribution of income. The improvement in the MPI status can be achieved by giving more emphasis on education, proper health habits, infrastructure and appropriate implementation of the land reform policy.

Abstract

A healthy child is a gift to society from a healthy mother. A mother’s health is thus considered as the key ingredient for the health of her child. With this backdrop, the study aims to explore the health status of the mothers and the role of the health status of a mother on the immunisation of her child of two marginalised areas of Assam, viz. Cachar and the Udalguri districts. The study also recognises the social, economic and demographic factors that regulate the child immunisation for the study area in a holistic way based on the novel data set especially collected for this study. The study exercises the Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Logit model to inquire about the objectives. The empirical results accredit us to conclude that mothers of Udalguri district are healthier than Cachar district. We also find that other than a mother’s health status, mother’s education, birth order, sex of the child, etc., are the important decisive components of child immunisation of the study area.
