The availability of flexible A.C. transmission system (FACTs) devices such as Static Var compensators (SVCs) and Static Compensators (STATCOMs), has led their use to control reactive power flows in transmission lines and system bus voltage. In addition to voltage control these devices can also be used effectively for improving the small signal stability of the power system and improve system damping. The objective of this paper is to explore the impact of the shunt connected FACTS devices namely Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Static Compensator (STATCOM), on the small signal stability of a single machine infinite bus system. A single machine infinite bus system is chosen to analyze the damping capabilities in a detailed manner. Keywords
