Abstract

In the present study, we aimed to compare the efficacy, tolerability, cardiovascular stability and recovery profile of propofol-thiopentone admixture with propofolketamine admixture in patient undergoing short surgical procedures. Sixty ASA grade I and II patients, age group 20-50 years of either sex scheduled for elective ambulatory surgical procedures were included. Patients were randomly allocated in two groups. Patients in group PT(n=30) were induced with admixture containing 10 ml of 1% propofol and 10 ml of 2.5% thiopentone and in group PK(n=30) were induced with admixture containing 10 ml of 1% propofol and 10 ml of 0.5% ketamine till loss of verbal response. Top up doses for maintenance were given as 2ml aliquots of the study drug. Induction dose and total maintenance dose of the drug, pain on injection, episode of apnoea, incidence of laryngospasm, bronchospasm, cough, hiccup and emergence phenomenon were recorded. Patients were monitored for pulse rate, non-invasive systolic and diastolic blood pressure through out the procedure. Recovery and discharge time was recorded. Induction and total maintenance dose of propofol was significantly high in group PT as compare to group PK. Patients in group PK have more stable haemodynamic profile as compare to patients of group PT. Incidence of side effects like apnoea and pain on injection were more in patients of group PT. The recovery and discharge time of the patients of both groups were comparable so it was concluded that combination of propofol and ketamine gives better efficacy and tolerability in terms of dose requirement, cardiovascular stability, less frequent side effects without affecting discharge profile as compare to propofol and thiopentone admixture.

Abstract

Background

Cesarean section(CS) is the most commonly performed obstetric surgical procedure throughout the world. Usually this is a life saving procedure for both mother as well as new born baby, but it also have some complications, related to both surgical and anaesthetical.

Aims & objectives

To evaluate different complications encountered during and after cesarean section within a period of 10 years at LSRH&SIMS and its management.

Materials & methods

An analysis of 8550 patients was done at LSRH&SIMS during 2000-2009. The patients who underwent cesarean section whether it was elective or emergency, cases booked or unbooked, done for various indications constituted the subject of study. The patients were analysed with respect to types of maternal morbidity encountered.

Results

In our study, we analysed 8550 deliveries during 2000 to2009, out of which 22% of patients were subjected for CS. Out of 22% of CS, 86.6% patients were operated as emergency and 13.3% as elective section. In present study, minor&major morbidity were seen in 33.3% of cases. Rest of the patients recovered without any problem in postoperative period.

Conclusion

In present study, incidence of CS was 22%. Most common indication for CS was foetal distress, followed by previous CS, prolonged labour, malpresentation&APH, etc. Incidence of maternal morbidity in this study was 33.3 %.

Abstract

Regulating the breath is an important part of yogic techniques. A study was started with the selection of fifty normal subjects of both genders, age 25±5 years. The subjects were trained for forced nostril breathing, which is a type of yogic techniques; i.e. right nostril breathing, left nostril breathing, alternate nostril breathing and breath awareness for duration of 30 minutes daily for two week. The subjects were examined before and after two week yoga training for immediate effect of forced nostril breathing in memory performance using WECHSLER memory scale. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of yoga between male and female in memory performance. Measure ANOVA analysis revealed a significant increase in Digit Span Forward , Digit Span Backward and associate learning recall performance due to forced nostril breathing at P<0.001 level . Comparative data shows that increment of digit span forward and associate learning memory in both males and females was almost equal at P<0.001 level and findings of digit span backward revealed that forced nostril breathing influences differently in males and females. Data of digit span backward test shows better memory performance in females.
