Abstract

Alcohol abuse is a worldwide problem that causes various sequelae, which severely affect physical and mental health, social and daily life. Quality of Life (QOL) is increasingly recognized as an important outcome measure in treatment studies and for service evaluation. The study was conducted with the aim of exploring the Quality of life in dual diagnosis, alcohol dependence syndrome and control group. A sample of 30 male subjects using purposive sampling and quantitative method. In each group a sample of 10 subjects were taken from OPD and ward of Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Delhi. Tool like quality of life (WHOQOL-Brf, 1998) were collected from subjects personally and separately from each other. Descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Wallis Test techniques were used to analyse the data. Results indicate that there was significant difference in quality of life among three groups but the quality of life related to physical domains, social domain and environmental domain was found poor in of dual diagnosis and alcohol dependent patients. The overall quality of life is high in psychological domains in all the three groups.

Abstract

Traditionally psychologists have focused on negative effect of stressful life events, but now there is growing realization that in some people it can bring positive change or posttraumatic growth. Most of the studies of posttraumatic growth were conducted on adults, there is some debate whether this topic is appropriate to study in children or not. In view of this present study was planned to study "sense of coherence, social support and coping as predictors of posttraumatic growth in orphan children." Sample of the present study comprised 50 subjects (age 10-12). Sample was collected from different orphanages in Delhi. Sense of coherence was measured by the Sense of Coherence Scale developed by Antonovsky (1987). Social support was measured by Social Support Questionnaire for children (SSQC) developed by Gordon, Thompson, Kelley, Schexnaildre, and Burns (2010). Coping was measured by Youth Coping Responses Inventory (YCRI) developed by Hernandez, Vigna, and Kelley (2010). Posttraumatic growth was measured by Posttraumatic Growth Inventory for Children (PTGI-C) developed by Cryder, Kilmer, Tedeschi, and Calhoun, (2006). The effect of these three predictor variables (sense of coherence, social support and coping) were assessed on the five dimensions of posttraumatic growth (i.e. relating to others, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual change and appreciation of life). Obtained data were analyzed with the help of simultaneous multiple regressions. Results showed that total sense of coherence was not found as a significant predictor but when dimensions of sense of coherence were studied as predictors of different dimensions of posttraumatic growth, manageability dimension of sense of coherence was found to be significant predictor of all but one dimension of posttraumatic growth, i.e., spiritual change. Total social support was a significant predictor as well as its two types, i.e., peer and adult of most of the dimensions of posttraumatic growth.

Abstract

Organizational commitment is a positive construct and important for the organizational development. The need is to find out the factors responsible for organizational commitment especially when employees focus more on individuals' goal rather than organizational goals. In this context the paper is an attempt to understand the concept of spiritual intelligence and quality of life at the work place and whether they contribute towards organizational commitment or not? 120 employees power sector industry were selected for the study. Senior and junior employees were approached; Seniority was based on the tenure in the same organization and not the total number of experiences. The results exhibited positive correlation among spiritual intelligence, quality of life and organizational commitment and also found significant difference between senior and junior employees on all the three variables. It was noted that among the junior employees the variation of scores were wide on spiritual intelligence and organizational commitment whereas senior employees had very less variation and that also towards higher scores. Quality of life scores were reported to be high with lesser variations among both seniors and juniors employees. The study determined a significant positive relationship among spiritual intelligence, quality of life and organizational commitment. The findings also revealed, the tenure of service in the organization was related to higher spiritual intelligence which develops the connection at work place that leads to commitment towards organization.

The paper attempts to trace the functioning of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South Africa as a practical application of the concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation. The paper aims to posit the various aspects of the TRC against the concept of positive affect and provides an insight into how positive affect can help promote individual well being and social harmony in conflict-ridden societies.

Abstract

Although traditional meditation has been found to be effective in improving physical and mental health of subjects, but there was a paucity of research of the effect of active or dynamic meditation on these variables. Therefore, the present study was aimed at studying the effect of dynamic meditation on anxiety of the subjects. Total sample of the present study comprised of 60 subjects, 30 each in experimental and control group. Subjects in the experimental group were given 21 days training in dynamic meditation. Anxiety of the experimental and control group subjects was measured in pre and post condition with the help of Sinha anxiety scale. Obtained data were analyzed with the help of analysis of covariance. In post condition, an experimental group scored better than the control group on total anxiety. An effect size of dynamic meditation on anxiety was moderate.

Abstract

Certain professions are demanding and often the cause of stress among the professionals. One such profession is social work. Social workers being in a challenging role, provide help and support to improve outcomes in people’s lives. It is not easy for social workers to deal with job related stress. Despite challenging and stressful work life, they opt to be in this profession. Present study is an attempt to find out some contributing factors for sustaining in stressful professions like this. Various studies have revealed that psychological capital and spiritual transcendence play an important role in adding value to one’s life. The aim of the present study was to find out the relationship between Psychological Capital, Spiritual Transcendence and Quality of Life. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 social workers, with minimum two years of experience working in NGO’s of Delhi. A correlation method was used with one group design. The tools administered were ASPIRES, PCQ and WHOQOL-BREF. The obtained data was used to analyze the results. All the variables were significantly related with each other. Psychological capital and spiritual transcendence came out as a significant predictor of quality of life in social workers. Hence they help to sustain in this profession with positivity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship of perceived organisational support, workplace spirituality and work engagement with turnover intentions. The study samples (N=397) were drawn from the population of Information Technology (IT) professionals working in IT companies in the Delhi-NCR region, using a purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire-based survey was conducted using Survey of Perceived Organisational Support (SPOS), The Spirit at Work Scale (SAWS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and Turnover Intentions Scale. For testing the conceptual model, structural equation modelling was utilised. PLS-SEM results reveal the existence of negative significant relationship amongst work engagement and turnover intentions. However, there is no causal relationship of perceived organisational support and workplace spirituality with turnover intentions. The findings indicate that organisations should provide meaningful work that could help in improving the retention of employees by reducing their turnover intentions.
