Aim:To perform the prescription analysis of rheumatoid arthritis in tertiary care hospital.METHODOLOGY: A prospective, observational study was conducted for a period of 6 months in Rheumatology out-patient department of Amrita institute of medical sciences, Kochi. The datawere collected from patient medication charts.
Results: 200 patients enrolled in our study, 82.5% were females with a mean age group of 52.6±10.136. In treatment all the patients were prescribed with DMARDs which is the main stay for the treatment of RA. Methotrexate was the most commonly prescribed DMARD (87.5%). Other DMARDs such as hydroxychloroquine (75.5%), sulphasalazine (50%) and leflunamide (25.5%) were also prescribed. NSAIDs and steroids were next treatment options. Frequently used NSAID was Etoricoxib (6.5%) and 2.5% of patients were prescribed with diclofenac gel. 37% of patients prescribed with steroids. Deflazacort was the commonly used corticosteroids. Other medicines such as folic acid, proton pump inhibitors, calcium supplements, ursodeoxycholic acid etc were also given to patients. 51.5% of patients were on PPI's. 44% of the study population was given calcium supplements. Majority of the patients were managed with combination therapy. Only 7.5% of patients were prescribed with 1 DMARD. In all the other cases patients were given 2 or 3 DMARDs. DMARDs were also given in combination with either steroid or NSAID or both of them. The combination of Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquine was found to be the most frequently used combination.
Conclusion: The study concluded that DMARDs is the main stay for the treatment of RA in which Methotrexate was the most commonly prescribed DMARD. NSAIDs and steroids were next treatment options. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can control the disease and its progression.

A scale was developed to measure the attitude of the farmers towards greenhouse technology based on "Scale Product Method" which combines the Thurston's technique of Equal Appearing Interval Scale for selection of the items and Likert's techniques of summated rating for ascertaining the response on the scale. A tentative list of 33 statements was drafted keeping in view the applicability of statements suited to the area of study. The statements collected were edited in the light of the criteria suggested by Edward. These statements were framed in such a way that they expressed the positive or negative attitude of the farmers. The score of each individual item on the scale was calculated by summing up the weights of the individual items. Scale and Q value was calculated by using Thurstone and Chave inter-quartile range. Finally the scale consisted of 12 statements whose median (scale) values were greater than Q values. However, when a few statements had the same scale values, statements having lowest Q value were selected by arranging the scale value in an order. Reliability was tested with 20 respondents and its value was 0.77 and validity of the scale was examined.Keywords

The silkworm, Bombyx mori L. feeds on mulberry leaves from which it ingests various nutrients to support physiological activities. Nutritional parameters like food consumption, excretion, assimilation, food combustion and total food converted under lethal and sub lethal doses of selenium at 3, 4, 5, and 6 days of V instar silkworm were studied. The selenium at lethal doses could decrease the parameters like food consumption assimilation efficiency and food conversion rate. However, the sub-lethal doses of selenium, particularly at 6 days of exposure, could exhibit significantly increased levels of the above parameters in the silkworm leading to its better survival.Keywords

The anthocorid predator, Blaptostethus pallescens Poppius was studied for the first time on red spider mite (RSM), Oligonychus coffeae Nieter. Laboratory studies indicated that B. pallescens can be successfully reared on RSM. Incubation period was 4.4 ± 0.34 days. The total developmental period of five nymphal instars to adults was 17.1 ± 0.34 days. Blaptostethus pallescens nymphs consumed RSM in the range of 3.83 ± 0.18 to 17.37 ± 0.95/day. Female B. Pallescens consumed more mites than male. The study clearly showed B. pallescens is a promising candidate in tea plantations for the control of red spider mite.Keywords

Eocantheocna concinna (Walker) is recorded as an important predator of lepidopteran pests in tea plantations of South India. It is described for the first time based on male and female genitalia. Biology of this predator was studied on Corcyra cephalonica larvae. Egg incubation period was 14.3 ± 0.4 days. Five nymphal instars were developed in a period of 33–36 days. Feeding efficacy of different instars of E. concinna was evaluated on third instar tea looper, Biston suppressaria. Results showed fourth and fifth instars of E. concinna attacked faster on B. suppressaria. The study describes E. concinna as a potential predator of various lepidopteran pests in tea plantations and a promising candidate for biological control of looper pests.Keywords

India is endowed, as the largest milk producer (165.4 million tons) with largest livestock population (512.05 million) in the World. Indian livestock farming embrace major share of smallholder dairy farmers and have a great potential for further improvement and is mandated to bring different stakeholders in dairy sector together, share knowledge and resources in order to engage in concerted action. One of the major challenges of the livestock sector is dissemination of technology, skills and quality services to farmers for improving productivity and quality of the produce, which need to be addressed. Various stakeholders from government, non-government and private sector are involved in livestock research and extension activities. But the major focus of all these stakeholders goes on animal health care activities and underscores livestock extension activities. Due to lack of proper linkage between these stakeholders, the research carried out in various institutions are not in accordance with the priority needs of dairy farmers and reduces the fitness of technology in field level. In order to tackle the present situation, it is essential to relook and reframe policies that assure effective linkages among researchers, extensionist, decision-makers and farmers, who have complementary expertise.Keywords
