Entomopathogenic fungi are known to produce a multitude of low molecular weight secondary metabolites involved in different biological processes including fungal development, intercellular communication and interaction with other organisms in complex niches. In the present investigation, heterogeneity in metabolome profile of three isolates of Beauveria bassiana viz., MH590235 (TM), MK918495 (BR) and KX263275 (BbI8) were analyzed through GC-MS. Distinct differences in metabolite profile of the isolates were observed. A total of 63 metabolites were detected from all the isolates combined. Metabolites, 5-Oxotetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid and undecane were found to be specific to BR isolate. Macrocyclic gamma lactones were detected in culture filtrates of BR and BbI8, oleic acid and hexadecanoic acid in TM and BR. An insecticidal compound, levoglucos an was detected in all the fungal isolates. Among the isolates, TM revealed higher variability in the metabolite production through PCA analysis. The metabolome of TM isolate contained compounds having several biological functions, viz., insecticidal and antimicrobial activity, lipid and fatty acid metabolisms and virulence enhancing factors.

Anthracnose caused by complex of Colletotrichum species is an economically important disease of chilli. The study involved 132 genotypes grown under field conditions. Among the genotypes evaluated, fifteen genotypes were moderately resistant to anthracnose with fairly high yield. In the order of merit, the genotypes were CA 177 (10.74%), Paramakudi 1 (16.64%), F 507 (17.17%), Bird’s eye chilli (17.85%), Kadaladi 1 (19.70%), Ramnad local (20.64%), CO 1 (20.82%), TA/CA/ 10 (21.56%), CA 166 (21.94%), CA 188 (22.29%), Paramakudi 2 (22.45%), CA 13/6 (23.42%), Chilli CO hybrid 1 (24.36%), IC 342465 (24.68%) and CA 165 (25.70%). whereas, 40 genotypes were susceptible with PDI ranging from 26.30 to 50.69 per cent and majority of the genotypes (77nos) were found to be highly susceptible to anthracnose with per cent disease index ranging from 51.81 to 96.42 per cent. The moderately resistant genotypes identified in the present investigation will serve as donors or source of resistance for anthracnose. Keywords

Rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.) is one of most serious insect pests of stored grains. Management of this is thus vital and fumigation with phosphine gas is the most common method. However, overreliance on this has resulted in the development of heritable resistance in S. oryzae. The detection of frequency and distribution of phosphine resistance is crucial for the development of resistance management strategy. This study assesses the frequency, strength and distribution of phosphine resistance in S. oryzae populations from four southern states of India viz., Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The bioassay results revealed that all these survived at both the discriminating concentrations of 0.04 and 0.25 mg/ l. There were no susceptible and weak resistant populations, and exhibited varied frequency of strong resistance ranging from 13.33 to 80.90%. The populations from Pudukottai (80.90%) recorded high frequency of strong resistance followed by Trichy (68.97%) and Tirunelveli (67.82%) ones; the one from Thiruvarur exhibited lowest (13.33%). The results indicated that the resistance to phosphine in S. oryzae was common and prevalence of strong resistant individuals was prevalent across the sampled regions. Keywords
