Abstract

The most common incomplete cervical spinal injury is central cord syndrome. As defined by Schneider et al in 1954, there is disproportionately greater motor deficit in the upper limbs than in the lower limbs. In this prospective study, 26 in-patients with cervical spine injury with greater motor loss in the upper limbs following the injury were selected. Based on clinical status and radiological findings, 19 were operated upon. Results at 6 weeks and 6 month follow up are discussed. Overall, the results of surgery in these cases were rewarding.

Abstract

Foliated augen gneisses with streaky character, such as the Lingtse Gneiss of Sikkim-Darjeeling area, occur throughout the Himalaya. The Lingtse Gneiss is highly deformed and Occurs as thin tabular bodies. Considerable textural variation is noticed depending on the intensity of deformation and grain growth. The rocks are peraluminous and show fractionated REE pattern (La_n/Lu_n = 1.2-6.8). These gneisses were previously dated at 1075 and 2034 Ma by Rb-Sr method. The results of the present isotopic age determination by Rb-Sr and Pb/Pb methods indicate ages of 1678 ± 44 Ma and 1792 ± 45 Ma respectively. The variability and scatter of isotopic composition are believed to reflect imprints of tectono-thermal events.

Abstract

The heart tissue is considered highly responsive to thyroid hormones. However, the functional aspect of cardiac mitochondria in this context is not yet fiilly elucidated. The present work for the first time attempts to highlight the possible effects of thyroid hormone on peroxidative stress in mitochondrial milieu of rat heart with respect to its primary antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant enzymes of post-mitochondrial fraction (PMF) were also investigated for comparative purpose.

Present investigation records the morphology and life cycle of one new species of cephaline gregarine Hoplorhynchus Carus, 1863 (Apicomplexa : Conoidasida), viz., Hoplorhynchus brachythrii sp.n. from odonate fly Brachythemis contaminata (Fabricious) with a short description of seasonal prevalance of parasite and host infection from Murshidabad,West Bengal.
