The Cauvery river is India’s fourth largest river, draining about 89,600 sq. km (Jayaram et al., 1982). The river originates at Talakaveri, Kodagu district of Karnataka and flows generally south east and finally emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Since historical times the river water is extensively utilized for agriculture, fisheries, irrigation and navigation purposes. In recent years they have been further subjected to many multi-purpose hydro-electric and other projects. As a result, a number of old and new barrages, weirs, anicuts or dams, have been constructed across the river. It is considered as the lifeline of the ancient kingdoms and modern cities of South India. The Cauvery estuary, located along the east coast of India, is a part of the Cauvery river basin (Ramanathan et al., 1988). The river bifurcates into two large branches, the Kollidam (Coleroon) and Cauvery at Grand Anicut (a dam near Trichirapalli).Full Text

57 samples belonging to 21 species of 13 families under 04 order of Mollusca were studied from Budhabalanga estuary which were found deposited in National zoological collection of the Estuarine Biology Regional Centre. Number of bivalvia species (14) outnumbered gastropoda (7). It is also found that more than half of the species identified were found to be estuarine in its habitat.Keywords

A new sisorid catfish, Glyptothorax distichus, is described from the Barak-Meghna-Surma drainage in Mizoram, North-east India. It is distinguished from its congeners in having a combination of the following characters: a chevron-shaped thoracic adhesive apparatus, with poorly developed median depression that is widely opened posteriorly by skin ridges; short dorsal fin spine; short and slender caudal peduncle; unculiferous ridges of adhesive apparatus not extending anteriorly onto gular region; absence of plicate on ventral surfaces first pectoral and pelvic fins rays, smooth skin on head and body; presence of two broad pale cream longitudinal stripes on body; and 20 + 17 Vertebrae.Keywords

A preliminary study was conducted to understand diversity of macrobenthic components and aquatic insect fauna of Subhadra estuary, Ganjam, Odisha. A total of 81 specimen of Aquatic Insects belonging to 6 species and 5 genera, 52 mollusca species/subspecies along with 9 species of crab were identified Apart from that, four species of hermit crabs under 2 genera and 2 families were also identified from of 95 specimens from the study locality.Keywords
