The practice of traditional medicine for the control of fertility in most parts of Ethiopia is based on the uses of plant medicines for many years. The fact that the herbal medicines have been employed for such a long time does not guarantee their efficacy and safety. The aim of the present study was therefore to carry out phytochemical screening, efficacy and safety studies on one of the traditionally used anti- fertility plants: Dodonea viscose Linn. The secondary metabolites of the leaves of this plant were determined. The methanolic extract of the leaves of this plant were investigated for their anti-fertility activity in female rats. The identification of the secondary metabolites showed that the leaves of the plant contained alkaloids, phytosterols and polyphenols. It was found that the extract reduced significantly (p< 0.01) the number of liters and administered through oral route. It also produced ant fertility effect in a dose dependent manner and the contraceptive effect was manifested for a definite period of time. Furthermore, the extract prolonged significantly the anti-implantation and early abortifacient activity. All these observations suggest that the extract has antifertility activity and is safe at the effective anti-fertility doses employed in this study. Keywords

A number of organic compounds obtained by chemical synthesis as model compounds have useful antimicrobial activities. Quinazoline ring is an aromatic benzopyrimidine system;many of its derivatives possess interesting biological activities, such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor. In our study, the biological activity of synthesized quinazoline semicarbazone derivatives were characterized by antimicrobial screening against several gram-positive, gram negative bacteria, and fungus. The purity of the synthesized compounds was characterized by physicochemical properties, such as solubility, melting point, and thin layer chromatography (TLC). Elemental analysis for carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen was performed according to standard procedures. The presence of functional groups was analyzed using FT-IR spectra. Molecular structural information for the compounds was analyzed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The wavelengths of maximum absorbance for all the synthesized compounds were measured by UV-Visible spectroscopy. Thereby the chemical structures of the synthesized quinazoline derivatives were confirmed. Antimicrobial screening for all the compounds exhibits characteristic microbial inhibition. A detailed study is in progress to modify the synthetic route, structural activity, and toxicological barriers for the enhanced pharmacological efficiency of synthetic antibiotics. Keywords

An inflammatory response appears after activation of immune response. Inflammation is a response to remove the primary cause of cell injury. Dead cells, damage tissue sand initiate the repair process. Inflammation may be of two types acute and chronic. Medicinal plants has a potential source of therapeutic aid has a attended a significant role in all over the world for both human and animals not only in the disease condition but also a potential for maintaining a proper health. The plant Bryophyllum pinnatum species (roots) are evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity. Aim: Anti-inflammatory activity of Bryophyllum pinnatum was evaluated using Carrageenan induced paw oedema, Histamine induced paw oedema and Egg white induced paw oedema. Materials and Methods: To prepare methanolic extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum roots and investigate the anti-inflammatory activity by Carrageenan induced paw oedema, Histamine induced paw oedema and Egg white induced paw oedema. Result: The result obtained indicates that the extract found to have significant (p<0.0001) anti-inflammatory activity in rats. The extract at the test doses 200mg/kg reduced the oedema induced by carrageenan by 41.26% at 3 h, whereas the standard drug showed 47.35% of inhibition ass compared to the control group. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum are safe upto 500mg/kg for continues administration and it can be used as anti inflammatory agent without any harmful effectsKeywords

Introduction: The prevalence of anaemia is high in developing countries due to poor economic, malnutrition, heredity diseases and pregnancy and reduced health care utilization. Increased Iron requirement and mal absorption of Iron also cause the Anaemia in chronic blood loss during menstrual periods. Methodology: A randomised, cross sectional study was conducted for 6 months Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria.120 anaemic patients were screened for biochemical tests. Results: Out of 120 patients, 32% were male and 68% were female. Majority of patients fall under the age group of 17 to 30 years. The educational status indicates, 40% were high school and 35% were illiterate. Majority of the patients were ideal body weight in 38% and 34% were under over weight. The severity was analysed based on Hb value and found that, 8% patient were severe, 8% were moderate and 88% were in mild anaemia. The mean Hb value was found that 10.82 mg/dl. Only 40% of patients are taking the daily breakfast regularly and 42% of female patients not consuming red meat, fish and chicken. Serum ferritin value is only 5.8 ng/ml, MCV found that 72.30 fL and Hb is 10.82 g/dl. Conclusion: The health education on healthy diet and creating awareness on risk factors of anaemia helps to avaoid the severity and complications of anaemia. The effective Pharmaceutical care services on anaemic patients are essential to prevent the morbidity and mortality rate. Keywords
