In the restructured power systems, ancillary services markets have been established in most of the regions throughout the world. Ancillary services take part in a vital role in electricity market for the reliable and economic operation of the power system. For any imbalance in the supply and demand, the frequency of a system changes from its nominal value. Hence ancillary services are needed to maintain the frequency at its standard value. In this paper, a framework for ensuring power system reliability in competitive power markets is developed based on a market for frequency regulation ancillary services. Keywords

This paper describes a Wind turbine coupled doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for modern wind energy conversion scheme. A grid side converter control is performed to maintain synchronism of DFIG with the Electrical Grid. The limitation of DC-link voltage fluctuation for an AC-DC-AC converter is analyzed. The converters allow four-quadrant operation in the P-Q plane by adjusting its switching pattern, thereby paving way for several drive applications. An improved control strategy with the instantaneous rotor power feedback is proposed to limit the fluctuation range of the dc-link voltage. A decoupled P-Q controller to regulate the DC link voltage is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink, and the effect of variations in grid side voltage on the converter performance is examined. Keywords

To meet the growing load demand, power industries throughout the world are undergoing restructured process in which the Independent Power Producers (IPP) must respond quickly to the load changes with respect to time. This paper describes the solution for Optimal Power Flow (OPF) in competitive market using Differential Evolution (DE)technique. The proposed approach is capable of obtaining minimum solution irrespective of the nature of the objective function. The effectiveness of the approach is compared with the performance of Particle Swarm Optimization technique and other published works. The obtained OPF solution satisfies the standard transient stability rotor/voltage criteria. The proposed algorithm has been demonstrated on IEEE 30 and Indian utility 62 bus systems with various case studies.

To investigate the capability of regulating power flow in Single Machine Infinite bus system using Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is the main focus of this paper. This paper presents the dynamic operational characteristics of Unified Power Flow Controller using switching level model. The real & reactive power flow is controlled by varying the shunt converter firing angle and modulation index of the series converter. The simulation is carried out in Simulink based MATLAB environment. The simulation result proves that the UPFC makes the power factor of the system is unity and the total harmonic distortion of line voltage are effectively minimized. The proposed controller shows the good performance & effectiveness of controlling the real and reactive power and also damping the oscillation due to system faults. Keywords
