Abstract

Forest Officers are quite often called Upon to work out the compensation, which has to be charged from the party is whose favour the forest land is released. The application of Foustmann's Formula for determining the espectation value of immature crops has been discussed. The author has pointed out that it would not be correct to accept the present value of the mature crops and thinning products while applying this formula. The price increase during the period when the crop will mature for felling has to be ascertained from the past market trends and the values of final crop and the intermediate yields worked out at the computed rates.

Abstract

The development of the scientific management of forests in Bihar has been traced. Yield was used to be fixed arbitrarily till Haines wrote the first regular Working Plan in 1903-04, and introduced Selection felling. With the introduction of the Conversion to Uniform System in Porahat, Saraods and Kolhao, the yield in Periodic Block I was generally fixed by volume expressed in terms of unit values and Selection felling. Were prescribed in the other Periodic Blocks and in the Hill Working Circle. Smythies' safeguarding formula was first adopted in the State in Derry's plan for Porahat. Past-war years have seen the evolution of the technique of partial sampling enumeration. Startlng from completely randomized design in Palaman, the stratification has been taken to a Compartment or a group of Compartments in Saranda and Kolban. It is suggested that stratum design based on considerations of geology, topography and aspect should appreciably increase the precision of the estimates. Laying out of increment plots, both linear or of irregular sizes has been suggested not only to find out the response of the forest to the prescribed treatment but also to fix the correct values of Smythies' Constants. It has also been suggested that the yield might be fixed separately for ddferent Compartments or a set of homogeneous compartments even in the same felling series.

Abstract

At present, rice occupies about two-third of the total cropped area (25 lakh ha) in the state of Assam. Being the single major source of agricultural GDP, rice plays a significant role in the state economy. A study was conducted in districts of Karimganj, Lakhimpur and Jorhat of Assam to assess the extent of adoption of rice varieties recommended by AAU, Jorhat. A purposive sampling technique was followed and statistical methods such as percentage, frequency, mean and ranking were used for analysing the data. Data were collected through personal interview method during the period of 2010-11. A total of 360 respondents were interviewed with the help of the structured schedule. Among the various AAU recommended rice varieties cultivated in Karimganj district 'Ranjit' was the most widely adopted (100%) followed by 'Bahadur' (60.83%). In Lakhimpur district 'Ranjit' (62.50%) was followed by 'Mahsuri' (27.50%). Whereas in Jorhat district 'Ranjit' was adopted by 92.50 per cent respondents followed by 'Bahadur' (40.00%). Positive and significant correlation can be observed between the extent of adoption of AAU recommended rice varieties with age, family size and operational land holding.

Abstract

Instructional technology can be defined as a system of thoughts and processes which helps in optimizing the way curriculum is taught in the classrooms. Its effective use by the teachers would require them to understand its various dimensions viz., design and development of instructional methods which include setting instructional objectives, implementation of the instructional strategy, management of classroom teaching and evaluation of what has been taught and understood by the students. In the present study, teachers' effectiveness in the use of instructional technology was assessed with respect to its use in classroom teaching covering four dimensionsdesign and development of instructional materials or methods, implementation of instructional strategy, classroom teaching management and evaluation, teachers self- evaluation and student evaluation were used to find out the teaching effectiveness of the teachers. The study was conducted at the College of Agriculture (Jorhat) and the Biswanath College of Agriculture (Sonitpur) under Assam Agricultural University with a view to measure the effectiveness of teachers in their use of instructional technology in classroom teaching. Both teachers and students of these colleges were the respondents and selected by using a proportionate random sampling design. A total of 70 teachers and 130 students were selected for the study. The data were collected by administering structured questionnaires. The percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation, co-efficient of variation, Chi-square test, Pearson's product moment co-efficient of correlation, multiple regression and 'z' test of significance for difference of two means, were used in statistical analysis and interpreting the data.

Abstract

A study was conducted in the districts of Karimganj, Lakhimpur and Jorhat of Assam to assess the impact of AAU recommended rice production technology in terms of structural changes occurring in farmer fields in Assam. A purposive sampling technique was followed and statistical methods such as percentage, frequency, mean and ranking was used for analysing the data. Data were collected through personal interview method during the period from late 2009 to early 2010. A total of 360 respondents were interviewed with the help of the structured schedule. About 12.50 per cent sample farmers had Kutcha irrigation channels throughout the three years covered under the study. In terms of farm machinery, 67.50 per cent respondents had sprayers and 48.61 per cent had weeders. Also, 36.67 per cent respondents had tube wells while 19.72 per cent and 3.33 per cent respondents had pump sets and dusters, respectively. About 1.39 per cent respondents also had threshers. Among the sampled respondents 4.17 per cent had power tillers and 0.28 per cent had tractors. Moreover, 93.61 per cent respondents possessed improved mud boundaries. It was seen that the total average cropping intensity in relation to rice in the study area was 108.90 per cent. Among the three districts covered under the study Lakhimpur had the highest average cropping intensity in relation to rice (120.82%) followed by Karimganj (106.58%) and Jorhat (99.30%).

Abstract

Two fungicides (carboxin and thiram) and two bio-control agents (Pseudomonas fluorescens and Trichoderma harzianum) were evaluated as seed treatment in different combinations against Sclerotium rolfsii, the causal organism of collar rot of chickpea (Cicer arietinum). Seed treated with T. harzianum (4g/kg seed) + carboxin (0.5g/kg seed) provided maximum protection to the crop by giving maximum seedling emergence (495.0/20 m²), final plant stand (480.4/20m²) and grain yield (18.2q/ha). Other treatment combinations significantly increased seedling emergence, final plant stand and grain yield compared to control.

Abstract

The "displacement effect" hypothesis may be one of the relevant aspects to consider while dealing with the tax revenues or public expenditure over a long period of time. This will give proper weightage to the 'Shift' and 'Changes in elasticity' if any, in the revenue and/or expenditure functions.

In this paper, therefore, an attempt has been made to examine whether (or not) the inclusion of the "displacement effect" hypothesis in the determinant studies would provide better explanation to the growth of tax revenue (or expenditure) and would suggest a better alternative forecasting model. Data used in the study pertain to Union Tax Revenue in India for a period of thirty years. Our findings suggest that revenue expenditure functions give a "better fit" when socio-political variables of global and non-global nature are taken into account.

Abstract

Shifting cultivation, also known as Jhum cultivation is the traditional slash-and-burn cultivation in hilly areas of northeast India. This type of cultivation is age old and practiced from generation to generation. This practice is considered as a hazardous practice that effects the environment. It is often considered as the main causes of forest fires, flash flood and soil erosion resulting in reduced and degraded primary land resource. The negative impact of such practice has triggered serious alarm to implement effective strategies. The only possible means to sustain the environment could be organic farming, considering the minimal usage of chemicals by the people of the region by nature. However, it is not easy to eliminate this practice since it is linked to culture and socio-economic conditions (Debral, 2002). Though several strategies and approaches have been followed to change the mindset of the farmers to shift from Jhum cultivation to a more sustainable form of cultivation, there seems to be not much improvement. Therefore, it was of interest to find out the attitude of the farmers towards shifting cultivation so that more effective strategies can be developed by decision makers, policy planners and extension functionaries.

Abstract

The agricultural technology management agency (ATMA) is a registered society of key stakeholders involved in agricultural activities for sustainable agricultural development in the district. It is a focal point for integrating research and extension activities and decentralizing day-to-day management of agricultural extension system. As the ATMA programme is under operation for the last ten years in Assam, the researchable questions may arise that to how and what extent the extension personnel (Members of ATMA Governing Body) from respective district performed their role to accomplish the functions/activities of ATMA. Keeping in view, a research study was carried out with the objectives i.e. 1. To assess role performance of members ATMA governing body, 2. To find out direct and indirect effects of a set of selected predictor variables on role performance of members of ATMA governing body. A multistage purposive cum random sampling method was followed for selection of the respondents of the study. The findings of the level of role performance of the GB members revealed that 80.00 per cent of the respondents had low to medium level of performance. Only 20.00 per cent of them were found with high level of role performance. The value of co-efficient of multiple regression (R²) being 0.611 indicated that the independent variables viz., job satisfaction, achievement motivation, motivational profile, job value cherished, attitude towards extension work, organizational climate, leadership ability, role conflict and job stress jointly contributed 61.10 per cent towards the role performance of GB members. The F value (F=4.937**) was also found to be significant. The results of the path analyses that the variables leadership ability, job stress, motivational profile, achievement motivation, organizational climate and job satisfaction emerged to be six most important variables which exhibited substantial direct effects on the level of role performance of the GB members.

Abstract

The importance soil management lies with the fact that 95.00 per cent of our food is directly or indirectly produced on our soils and the sustainable management of soil can produce upto 58.00 per cent more food than produced usually. Present study was conducted in three villages of Jorhat district of Assam to understand the perception of farmers on soil management for boosting healthy soil. A purposive sampling technique was followed and statistical methods such as percentage, frequency were used for analyzing the data. Data were collected from 90 respondent farmers through personal interview method with the help of a structured schedule. Among different soil management practices followed in the study area, majority (90.00%) of the farmers highly agreed that straw mulching as the most convenient and available soil management practices for boosting healthy soil whereas another majority (51.11%) of farmers agreed that soil management practices are time and labour consuming.
