Abstract

Mutillidae is a cosmopolitan family of aculeate hymenoptera. They are commonly referred to as 'velvet ants' because of the appearance of the dense hair that covers their bodies. They exhibit strong sexual dimorphism. The males are winged (rarely brachypterous or apterous) and possess a normal apocritan mesosoma, while the females are entirely apterous, and most of them exhibit complete fusion of the sclerites (Brothers, 1995). Even though Mutillidae are distributed in all biogeographical regions, their greatest diversity occurs in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. They are commonly found in desert and sandy areas.

Abstract

The solitary wasps comprises of 3 subfamilies (Euparagiinae, Masarinae, and Eumeninae) in the family Vespidae. The Euparagiinae currently consists of 10 valid species in 1 genera. The Masarinae includes 344 species in 14 genera. The Eumeninae are cosmopolitan with 3579 species in 210 genera (Pickett and Carpenter, 2010). Only one of these three subfamilies Eumeninae, is found in Vietnam and in South-East Asia in general (Carpenter and Nguyen, 2003).

Abstract

The hover wasp of the genus Parischnogaster Von Schulthess, 1914 (Hymenoptera:Vespidae:Stenogastrinae) consists of 10 valid species and all of them are described from the Oriental Region. Out of these, the species P. mellyi (de Saussure, 1852) is reported from India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim). This species is also recorded from Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines (Das & Gupta, 1989; Carpenter & Kojima, 1996; Srinivasan & Girish Kumar, 2009). In this paper, we recorded this species for the first time from Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The present records extend its known geographical range in India significantly from north eastern (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya) and eastern India (Sikkim) to central India (Chhattisgarh), southern India (Andhra Pradesh) and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Abstract

The members of the genus Vespa of the subfamily Vespinae of the family Vespidae are commonly known as hornet wasps. Hornet wasps are predominantly found in the Oriental and Palaearctic Regions of the world. There are 23 valid species are reported worldwide of which 16 species from the Indian subcontinent and 15 species from India (Carpenter & Kojima, 1997). Economically, hornet wasps can be both beneficial and harmful. They are beneficial as predators of agricultural, forest and hygienic pests. The larvae and pupae of them are utilized as food in some parts of the world. They are harmful as they sting human beings and domesticated animals, they are the natural enemies of honey bees and they are damaging fruits by feeding just prior to harvest.

Abstract

The family Scoliidae, belonging to the Superfamily Vespoidea of the order Hymenoptera, is a group of most primitive solitary aculeate wasps. They are commonly known as hairy wasps. Adults are stoutly bodied, densely hairy, often predominantly black, commonly marked with yellow, orange or red and extensively modified for fossorial habit. Their wings are hyaline, yellowish hyaline or dark with metallic reflections. The hair varies from entirely black or black mixed with white to entirely golden or reddish. Size may vary in length from 5 mm to 36 mm, rarely up to 50 mm. They are usually very fast moving wasps. Males and females usually show higher degree of sexual dimorphism. They have the biological characteristics of the more primitive parasitic Hymenoptera, and the morphological characteristics of the more advanced “stinging wasps”. The larvae of scoliid wasps are ectoparasitoides on white grubs usually Scarabaeoidea larva. Because of their parasitic habits, it is possible to exploit some of these wasps for biological control of insect pests.

Abstract

The genus Odontomutilla was described by Ashmead in 1899 based on the type species Mutilla saussurei Sichel et Radoszkowski. Thirty four valid species of this genus are reported from the Oriental Region of which eleven species from the Indian subcontinent (Lelej, 2005). The species Odontomutilla speciosa (Smith) is so far recorded from China. In this paper, we report O. speciosa for the first time from the Indian subcontinent based on the specimen collected from Maharashtra, India. Since the original description is not sufficient for the proper identification of the species, detailed redescription with sufficient photographs is provided here. A checklist of the species of the genus Odontomutilla from the Indian subcontinent is also provided.

Abstract

The family Scoliidae is a group of solitary fossorial aculeate wasps commonly known as hairy wasps. Adults are usually black, commonly marked with yellow, white or red. Their wings are usually dark with metallic reflections. Vestiture varies from entirely black or black mixed with white to entirely golden or reddish. Body length may vary from 5 mm to 35 mm (rarely up to 50 mm). Sexual dimorphism is distinct. They are world wide in distribution but predominantly found in tropical region and consist of about 560 species, 220 subspecies distributed among 43 genera, 28 subgenera in two subfamilies: Proscoliinae and Scoliinae (Osten, 2005). The larvae of scoliid wasps are ectoparasitic on the larvae of Coleoptera, usually Scarabaeoidea but rarely Curculionoidea.

Abstract

The Sunderbans area is composed of a group of Islands from the mouth of the river Hooghly on the west and extending up to the river Meghna in the east, covering North and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal in India and Khulna and Barishal districts in Bangladesh. It lies approximately 87°51′- 91°30′ east longitude and 21°31′- 22°30′ north latitude. It is considered as the largest single mangrove belt of the world, comprising an area of 9827 sq. km of which 4264 sq. km comes under India. In 1989, the Government of India declared the entire Indian Sunderbans (9630 sq. km; mangrove belt plus nearby villages) as Sunderbans Biosphere Reserve. Due to its unique ecosystem, it has also been declared a World Heritage site in 1989. It is the largest estuary delta in the world with extremely rich diversity of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna.

Abstract

Latrielle (1802) erected the genus Chlorion (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) based on the type species Sphex lobatus Fabricius, 1775. This is a widely distributed genus all over the world except Australia and Europe (Bohart & Menke, 1976). Twenty species with additional three subspecies are recorded under this genus worldwide (Pulawski, 2009) of which three species namely Chlorion lobatum (Fabricius, 1775), C. regale Smith, 1873 and C. splendidum Fabricius, 1804 are recorded from the Indian subcontinent. In this paper, the genus Chlorion is reviewed with several new distributional records.

Saussure , 1863, proposed the name Anterhynchium for division I of genus Rhynchium Spinola in Saussure, 1852. Vecht, 1963, designated Rygchium synagroides Saussure, 1852, as the type species. The genus Anterhynchium de Saussure is distributed at Australian, Ethiopian, Oriental and Palearctic Regions of the world. Forty four species are recorded under this genus from the world (GBIF Data Portal webpage) of which five species namely Anterhynchium (A.) abdominale (Illiger), A. (A.) mellyi (de Saussure), A. (Dirhynchium) coracinum Vecht, A. (D.) flavolineatum (Smith) and A. (D.) flavomarginatum (Smith) are recorded from Indian subcontinent.

Abstract

The genus Ancylotropus was erected by Cameron (1909) based on the male specimen of the type species Ancylotropus cariniscutis Cameron. This genus was treated briefly by Narendran & Sheela (1995) and Boucek (1988) and in detail by Heraty (2002). They are distributed in Palaeotropical Region through the Malagasy subregion to western Malaysia. Six species are known from all over the world of which 4 species were reported from Oriental Region including 2 species from Indian subcontinent.

Abstract

Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh which is spread over an area of about 140.30 sq. km with rare and varied species of fauna and flora. This sanctuary is surrounded by Poma River in the East, Pachin River in the South, Neorch River in the North West. It is situated at 27°5' 35.72'' N 93°37' 30.72'' E latitude and longitude coordinates having an altitude of 250-2000 msl receiving an average annual rainfall of ca 400 mm. The climate is moist and humid with the varying temperature range of 10-30° C.

Abstract

Though relatively more taxonomic works on the potter wasps have been done on the fauna of Palearctic and Nearctic regions, our information on the fauna of Indian subcontinent is very scanty and fragmentary. Aniong the species reported from Indian subcontinent many need detailed taxonomic revision and redescription. One such species is Delta esuriens (Fabricius), originally described by Fabricius in 1787 as Vespa esuriens from India. Original description was very short which is inadequate for the identification at species level. Subsequently Bingham (1897) provide d a redescription of it which is also very short.

Abstract

The genus Omicroides was raised by Giordani Soika in 1961 based on the type species Eumenes singularis Smith. This genus differs from its nearest genus Eumenes Latrielle by having a distinct epicnemial carina on mesepistemum. This Oriental genus is represented by a single species Omicroides singularis (Smith). This species so far reported from Indonesia (Sumatra, Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sarawak), Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand (Smith, 1858; Giordani Soika, 1935; Vecht, 1937). In this paper, this genus is recorded for the first time from India based on the specimen collected from Nongpoh of Meghalaya state of north eastern India and a redescription is also provided.

Abstract

The hover wasps, Stenogastrinae, are a group of primitively eusocial wasps endemic to the Oriental region. They occupy an intermediate position between the solitary Eumeninae and the social Polistinae and Vespinae (Pickett and Carpenter, 2010). Members of this group exhibit considerable diversity in social behaviour and nest architecture. They usually inhabit shady parts of tropical forests and generally construct their delicate nests near water streams. The adult wasps do not fold their wings when at rest.

Abstract

The diversity of wasps of the family Vespidae from Dumna Nature Park, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh is studied. It consists of 20 species with an additional subspecies belonging to 11 genera under 3 subfamilies. Out of these, 13 species and an additional subspecies are newly recorded here from Madhya Pradesh. The parasitic association of strepsipteran insects are also reported for the first time in the genus Delta.

Abstract

A detailed systematic account of wasps of Kottooli and Thalassery-Dharmadam mangroves of Kerala are reported for the first time. Nineteen species of wasps (Vespidae - 16 species; Sphecidae - 3 species) were reported. The species Antepipona brunnipes brunnipes (Fabricius, 1804), A. sibilans (Cameron, 1903), Antodynerus punctatipennis (de Saussure, 1853), Apodynerus troglodytes troglodytes (de Saussure, 1855), Indodynerus capitatus Gusenleitner, 2008, Paraleptomenes miniatus mephitis (Cameron, 1901), Phimenes flavopictum (Blanchard, 1845), Ammophila clavus Fabricius, 1775 and Sphex argentatus Fabricius, 1787 are recorded for the first time from mangrove ecosystem. The species A. brunnipes brunnipes is recorded for the first time from India.

Abstract

Parapsilogastrus sahyadriensis Girish Kumar & Binoy sp. nov. is described from Kerala part of Southern Western Ghats, India. The species is illustrated and separated from other species of Parapsilogastrus. It is the first report of the genus Parapsilogastrus from India. A checklist of species is provided.
