Phloridzin, a chalcone derivative possessing plant growth regulating properties was applied as foliar sprays at fortnightly intervals on Solanum viarum Dunal plants grown under pot culture conditions starting from early seedling to the flowering and fruiting of the plants. The treatments consisted of 0 (control), 1, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/l of phloridzin. The physiological effects of phloridzin at different concentrations on the vegetative growth and development and the glycoalkaloid contents of the berries were studied. It was concluded that phloridzin at the highest concentration stimulated plant height, leaf number and yield of berries, whereas the lowest concentration increased the yield of solasodine only.Full Text

A single piece of meteorite weighing approximately 12 kg and dimension 10"× 9"× 8" fell at Komargaon town (lat. 26°39'N; long. 93°46'E), Golaghat district, Assam, India on 13 November 2015 (12:00 h, IST). We report here eye-witness accounts and a preliminary description of the sample which includes macro- and microstructures and a tentative petrologic-chemical classification. Sulphide mineralization in a thin shear of about 25 mts wide locating in the Potin - Yazali road section of Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh has been reappraised. The mineralization is structurally controlled. Structural elements include shear fractures and shear foliations; lithological variant is confined to garnetiferous quartz-biotite-schist. A comprehensive EPMA analysis of host minerals viz., garnet and biotite has been evaluated and P&T condition for the host rock has also been determined by garnet-biotite geothermometry. Ore mineralogical study revealed dominance of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor quantities of sphalerite, occasional patches of arsenopyrite and isolated finely disseminated bodies of pyrite. From the EPMA analysis of sphalerite, sphalerite geobarometry has been evaluated. The equilibrium temperature estimated for the peak metamorphic assemblages are 480°c ± 24°c while the pressure value might be higher than estimated value of 2.5 Kbar.Keywords

Indian beach placer sand deposits are, in general, ilmenite-rich. However, some concentrations are dominated by pyriboles. The Chavakkad-Ponnani (CP) area along the northern Kerala coast is one such deposit. This paper deals with the general character of the heavy minerals of CP with special emphasis on the characters of ilmenite. Most Indian beach sand ilmenites are of good quality. However, our observations on the ilmenites of CP using Optical Microscope, SEM and EPMA reveals that these are mineralogically very complex. The CP ilmenite varies from pure ilmenite to highly impure variety having intergrowths and inclusions of other oxide and silicate minerals. Ilmenite occurs as mix-crystals and forms intergrowth structure with hematite and Ti-hematite/ulvospinel; contains inclusions of hematite, quartz, and monazite. On the other hand ilmenite also occurs as inclusions within hematite and garnet. The pyriboles are dominantly amphiboles with hornblende-composition. Interestingly an inclusion of gold has been recorded within amphibole of hornblende composition. Garnets are mostly of almandine and pyrope type. Subordinate heavy minerals are sillimanite, zircon and rutile. Characteristic morphology, mineralogy and chemistry of amphibole, garnet and ilmenite together indicate that the placer sands of CP area are derived from the amphibolites, granite gneisses and basic igneous rocks lying in the hinterland towards the eastern border of Kerala. Though the overall quality of ilmenite is poor, highgrade ilmenite concentrate can be generated (of course with lower yield), by adopting precise mineral processing techniques. The CP deposit can be considered as a second-grade deposit but it has potential for future exploitation.Keywords
