Abstract

Lead (Pb) is an extremely toxic heavy metal, which is a serious threat to the health of children and wildlife. The main sources of Pb poisoning include lead paint and old gasoline spills (PbBrCl, 2PbBrCl NH4Cl) resulting in dust and soil contamination of food and water. Search for the potential lead accumulators has so far resulted in mainly extruders and plants capable of rhizofiltration. We for the first time report the capacity of the commonly growing perennial plant Ricinus communis L. (castor) as a potential lead accumulator independent of season under natural habitats.
