Birthweight is the single most important predictor of infant survival since both neonatal and post neonatal mortality increase exponentially with decreasing birthweight. The seed of death is sown in a majority of low birthweight (LBW) infants much before they are born and so many are more likely to die early and those who survive suffer illness, stunted growth and other health problems even as adults.

Kidney stone formation is one of the common afflictions of the urinary tract since ancient times and its incidence varies from country to country, region to region, race to race, sex to sex and according to age. There has been an upsurge in the incidence of renal stone disease in Europe and United States over the past 20 years. This condition affects one to 20 per cent of the general population with a lifetime incidence of 2 to 5 per cent in Asia, 8 to 15 per cent in Europe and North America and 20 per cent in Soudi Arabia.

Abstract

Causes of poor pregnancy outcome are complex and deep ischolar_mained in India. When pregnant women at risk do not have adequate access to proper diet and care during the antenatal period, at delivery or post partum, high maternal mortality is inevitable. Nearly 70 per cent of the Indian women of child bearing age reside in rural areas, where facilities for special care is limited. Risk scoring systems play a vital role in the identification of high risk pregnant women in such areas.

Abstract

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated significant relationships between serum vitamin A level and biochemical Indicators of Iron status. It is assumed that vitamin A is involved in the regulatoin of iron transport from the llver. It is also believed that vitamin A Improves the haemoglobin level by improving the absorption or utilisation of iron by the bone marrow. Recent studies done at different centres in India have shown a beneficial effect of vitamin A supplementation to pregnant women on haemoglobin values. This is significant. In the context of high prevalence of both anaemia and vitamin A deficiency in pregnant women. Hence, the present study was planned io study the impact of iron and vitamin A supplementation on anaemic pregnant women.

Abstract

Low availability and poor absorption of iron and repeated and closely spaced pregnancies place a constant drain on the iron stores of pregnant women. The increased iron requirement during pregnancy often outstrip the available supply of iron and induce low level of haemoglobin and haematocrit values resulting in decreased oxygen carrying capacity and impairment in foetal growth. Thus iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy may be on important risk factor contributing to the high incidence of low birth weight. This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the maternal iron status and birth weight of infants of selected mothers.

Abstract

Plant, foods such as cereals and legumes have consistently been listed as the major potential sources of dietary protein for feeding the world of tomorrow. In view of the growing demands for food grains in India where rice and wheat production may reach a plateau, exploitation of millets and less used cereals as food grain becomes inevitable. Although the chemical composition or amino acids make up of a dietary protein may give an elegant representation of the value of protein, it is necessary to verify in quality by actual biological experiment.
