- Growth and Productivity of AM Inoculated Tropical Tree Seedlings

Container grown seedlings of tropical trees such as Acacia leucophloea, A. mangium, A. nilotica, Delonic regia, Derris indica and Tamarindus indica were inoculated with three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) viz. Glomus fasiculatum, G. mosseae and Gigaspora margarita. The growth responses ortbe seedlings such as height, ischolar_main eo1lar diameter, ischolar_main and shoot biomass were analysed. In addition, accumulation of phosphate in ischolar_main, stem and leaves was also analysed. It was observed that there was a differential efficiency in mycorrhizal colonization and the specificity of fungal symbionts to stimulate host to a significant growth response.

The effects of diclofenac sodium on the activities of the steroidogenic enzymes 3β-Phydroxy steroid dehydrogenase and 17β-Phydroxy steroid dehydrogenase as well as testosterone hormone titres were studied in albino rats, at a dosage of 300μg/kg. body weight for short, mid and long duration treatments. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac sodium (Voveran) was injected intramuscularly at 1.5mgand3.0mg/kgbody weight respectively and vitamin E was administered orally at 4.0 mg/kg body weight for a period of 4 weeks to adult male albino rats. Low dose of diclofenac given for 4 weeks brought about marked reduction in the caudal tubular diameter. For economic reasons, our next generation overhead power transmission line towers will be built with new design concepts in order to reduce the weight of the support structures. This paper discusses the computer aided design and analysis carried out on a 220 kV Single Circuit transmission line tower built with a combination of Circular Hollow Sections and Angle sections rather than built with only Angle sections. After optimization, the comparative study is presented with respect to stresses, deflection and weight of both Circular Hollow Sections and Angle sections towers. There is a saving in steel weight up to 8% resulted when a Circular Hallow Section tower is compared with an Angle Section type. The analyses results are compared with full scale test carried out at Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) Bangalore, India are presented.Keywords

The technology of compaction of power transmission lines is being increasingly adopted by power industry to effectively make use of the Right of Way (ROW). For technical, aesthetic and economical reasons, our future transmission lines will have to be built with new design concepts using new materials. An attempt was made to build the transmission line tower cross arm with pultruded sections of Fibre Glass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) as a substitute for steel. The metallic towers have been deteriorating and corroding as a result of being in hostile environment i.e., wind, rain and salty environment etc. This paper describes the mechanical behaviour of FRP tower cross arm assembly simulated using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and compared with experimental results.Keywords

For transmission of electricity from power generation plant to substations, 4-legged lattice towers and monopoles are widely used, but the monopoles are much costlier than 4-legged lattice towers. To avoid the use of monopoles, in the present work, an approach has been adopted to use a special lattice type structure with eight legs. A 220kV multi-circuit suspension tower with 0 to 2o deviation has been considered for present study. The detail explanations, like, tower geometry, load calculations, analysis and design of the proposed structure has been covered in the paper. It has been observed that land requirement can be considerably minimized by use of the proposed 8-legged tower. The cost of the 8-legged tower is slightly higher than a 4-legged tower but much lesser than that of monopoles as the total weight of steel required is very less as compared to monopole. The results obtained from the study of the proposed tower have been compared with 4-legged tower and monopole. This paper discusses the feasibility of using the transmission line tower with 8-legs. The paper also discusses a comparative study of cost, right of way, height and base width of 4-legged tower and monopole with proposed 8-legged tower.Keywords

Towers are the most important component of the overhead power transmission line system. When failure occurs, direct and indirect losses are very high; hence accurate prediction of tower failure becomes very important for the reliability and safety of the transmission system. One cannot accurately predict the behavior of tower after practical loading conditions, so testing of tower for various loading conditions before installing in field becomes very important. The present paper discusses the structural behavior of towers during full scale testing carried out at Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore, India. Although, the towers were safe for various loading conditions based on the design/analysis, during full scale testing, different types of premature failures were observed. Necessary modifications in towers have been carried out and these towers were retested successfully. The details of remedial measures/strengthening of members carried out during testing are brought out in this paper.Keywords
