Abstract

This paper presents the optimization and mathematical modelling of machining parameters in Photochemical Machining (PCM) of SS316L. Twenty-seven experimental runs base on full factorial (3³) Design of Experiments (DoE) technique were performed. The control parameters considered were the etchant concentration, etching temperature and etching time. The response parameter was Undercut (U_c). The effect of control parameters on undercut was analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique and their optimal conditions were evaluated. It was found that etchant temperature and etching time are the most significant factors for undercut.

Abstract

The Aerospace industry's advancements have resulted in an increase in demand and production optimization of super alloys. These superalloys, such as Inconel 718, are generally characterized by very high strain hardening coefficients and as a result they are extremely difficult to machine. Inconel 718, a heat resistant super alloy (HRSA), is utilized in the hottest parts of a gas turbine able to withstand high operating temperatures typically between 540°C and 1000°C. CVD coated carbide tools with high hardness, wear resistance, and chemical stability offer proven benefits in terms of machining performance when machining Inconel 718.
The present work is an attempt to determine optimum machining parameters for turning of Inconel 718 in dry conditions with multiplayer CVD coated carbide tool (TiN/Al₂O₃/TiCN). The turning of Inconel 718 is performed on precision, heavy duty, and robust NH-22 Lathe. Investigation of machining parameters involved experimenting with different feed rates (0.04-1.04 mm/rev), different depth of cuts (0.2-1.15 mm), and different cutting speeds (1.91-93.73 m/min) while turning.
From the experimentations, it can be stated that the optimum machining parameters; Cutting speed=40.17 m/min, feed=0.1 mm/rev, and depth of cut=0.5 mm are best suited for semi-finish turning of Inconel 718 with CVD coated multi layer carbide tool based upon tool life.

Abstract

In the recent years reinforced plastics (GFRP, CFRP & others) are used in a wide field of manufacturing industry. The reinforced plastics are extensively used in many engineering applications as a substitution for the conventional materials. With an increase demand for composite materials like glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and others, the need to drill such products are increasing rapidly. In the present work drilling tests were carried out on GFRP composites with conventional HSS (18-4-1) drill bit and then by modifying the drill geometry (web or chisel edge) i.e. web thinning in order to show the effect of drill geometry in general and web (chisel edge) in particular on the performance of the drilling of GFRP composite. It is observed that the fiber orientations and drill geometry plays a vital role on the cut quality and delamination. The paper reports the findings in that direction.
