Abstract

The experiments was carried out to study the effect of spacing, planting methods and mulching on growth and floral parameters in gladiolus (Gladiolus hybridus L) cv. American Beauty at the Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore during both Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The experiments consisted of eight treatments with three replications were carried out by Randomized Complete Block Design. The experiment comprised of single row 30 x 20 cm and 40 x 20 cm with mulching and no mulching and double row 30x 20 x 60 cm and 40 x 20 x 80 cm with mulching and no mulching. The present investigation reveals that, there was an improvement in the growth and floral parameters in gladiolus in 30 x 20 cm spacing with mulched plots treatments. Improved growth, flower yield and corm yield were observed in plastic mulched plots irrespective of different levels of spacing, planting methods adopted.

Abstract

The experiments was conducted to study the effect of plant density, planting methods and mulching on floral and cormal parameters in Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybridus L) cv. American Beauty during both Kharif and Rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The experiments consisted of eight treatments with three replications, respectively were carried out by Randomized Complete Block Design. Days taken for spike emergence and first flower bud opening on the spike was, significantly less number of days (50.26 days) in T7 (40x20 cm, paired row mulching) followed by T1, T3, T5 (50.73, 51.27 and 51.63, respectively). The number of florets produced per spike, flower weight, flower yield per spike flower, yield per hectare recorded maximum in mulched plots with 30x20 spacing. There was increase in number of florets per spike, floret weight, floret yield per plot and per hectare was due to mulched plants i.e. T1, T3, T5 and T7 with single and paired row in both Kharif and Rabi season. The mulched plants like T1, T3, T5 and T7 with single row and paired row treatments showed significantly more number of corms, weight of corms, cormel number and cormel weight in mulched plots in both Kharif and Rabi seasons, respectively.

Abstract

Nodal segments of strawberry cv. Chandler were collected from the field and surface sterilization of the explants was carried out using various levels of decontaminants as different treatments viz. sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) 0.5% for 7, 5 and 3 min and mercuric chloride (Hg Cl₂) 0.1% for 5 min, 3 min and 3 min 10 sec. The explants were excised and cultured for 3 weeks on the initiation medium supplemented with various levels of BAP (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2mg/l) and its combination with GA (0.5 and 1mg/l). Sub culturing was done and finally ischolar_maining was initiated on the medium supplemented with various levels of IBA (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2mg/l) for 4 weeks. The results obtained indicated that, among the decontaminants, treatment of explants with Hg Cl₂ 0.1% for 3 min 10 sec resulted in the minimum contamination and browning of explants. Further, maximum shoot proliferation percentage, shoots per explant and minimum number of days to shoot initiation was observed when explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l BAP over other concentrations of either BAP or in combination with GA. However, the maximum length of shoots was obtained in medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l BAP + 0.5 mg/l GA. While, medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l IBA supported highest percentage of ischolar_maining, the highest number of ischolar_mains, maximum ischolar_main length of microcuttings and minimum number of days to ischolar_main initiation were observed in medium supplemented with 1mg/l of IBA.
