The present study was carried out with an objective to study the effect of intervention on concept development among rural pre-school children. The sample for the study constitute
d 62 children in the age of 3-4 years who were attending Anganwadies in three adopted villages of Dharwad taluka. Information on concept was
collected with the help of Boehm Scale. School based intervention programme was conducted for
two months to improve children's knowledge about different concepts. The results indicated significant improvement in the concept development of children where in more number
of children were fell under medium category at pre-test and after intervention more number of children were fell under high category of concept development. An intervention programme enhanced the cognitive abilities and knowledge of different concepts among the rural pre-schoolers.

The study was conducted to know the problem solving and creative thinking ability of High School children. Sample of 300 High School children from teenage group 13-16 years of both sex, studying in 8th and 9th standard were selected from government and private schools of Dharwad district. General problem solving ability of the students was assessed by using check list and mathematical problem solving ability of children was assessed by Problem solving ability inventory developed by Dubey (2010). Creative thinking scale developed by Mehdi (1989) was used to assess the creative thinking ability of children. Results revealed that majority of the children had medium level of general and mathematical problem solving ability and high level of creative thinking ability. Gender has significant influence on problem solving ability however girls performed better in general problem solving ability than boys, whereas boys performed better than girls in mathematical ability.Keywords

Aptitude is a condition or set of characteristics regarded as symptomatic of an individual's ability to acquire with training some usually specified knowledge, skill and set of responses. Aptitude tests in today's competitive world; it helps school students throughout their lives and has a really huge impact on their outlook towards life. This study is taken on school students to know their potential so that it helps them in choosing their career and to select the different streams for their future. Hence the study was undertaken with objectives to know the aptitude of urban and rural school students and to know the differences on aptitude dimensions. The samples were selected from two urban and two rural schools among which were 40 urban and 40 rural school students were randomly selected from 9th and 10th standards. The data was collected using differential aptitude testing developed by Bennett et al. (1993) on verbal reasoning, numerical ability, abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning and scholastic aptitude. The results indicated that significant difference was observed between urban and rural school student. Among urban group most of the students belonged to high level of aptitude dimensions like verbal reasoning, numerical ability, abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning and scholastic aptitude. There was significant difference between boys and girls with dimensions of aptitude among rural and urban school students.Keywords

The study on “Resiliency among academically backward children” was undertaken with objectives to assess the level of resiliency and factors influencing resilience among academically backward children. The sample comprised 210 academically backward children studying in 7th, 8th and 9th standards of Government schools from four villages of Dharwad taluk. Results revealed that, majority of academically backward children belonged to medium level in all the components of both internal and external resilience. Further results revealed that, age, gender and SES factors had significant influence on both internal and external resilience of academically backward children.Keywords

The pre-school children develop a wide range of cognitive abilities and use of different learning materials help young children to use their cognitive ability and creativity in developing their imagination and mental development. The aim of the present study was to know the comparison between rural an urban pre-school children for cognitive abilities. The samples for the study comprised of 120 preschool children in the age group of 4 to 6 years from two anganwadies of Dharwad and two anganwadies of Gadag taluks of UAS jurisdiction. Bracken Basic Concept scale (2006) was used to assess the cognitive abilities of preschool children. The results revealed that majority of the preschool children belonged to average level in all the dimensions of cognitive abilities in rural and urban areas. Gender had significant influence on cognitive abilities of pre-school children among rural area. It was observed that in rural area girls had higher level of cognitive abilities than boys.Keywords

A study on "Influence of selected factors on psychological well being of rural and urban PUC students" was carried out in the year 2016-2017 in rural and urban areas of Dharwad taluk, Karnataka. The sample for the study comprised of 160 PUC students were from rural area and 160 from urban area of Dharwad taluk. The respondents' age ranged from 16 to 18 years studying in PUC-I year and PUC-II year from Arts and Commerce streams. Ryff s psychological well being scale (1995) was used to assess the psychological well being of PUC students. The results revealed that there exists a significant difference between class, gender, types of college and types of stream with regard to psychological well being of pre-university college students. Class wise comparison revealed that PUC II year college students had better psychological well being than PUC-I students. Gender wise comparison indicated that girls had better psychological well being than boys in both rural and urban areas. Significant association was observed between government and aided colleges in urban area with regard to psychological well being. There was significant association as well as difference observed between arts and commerce streams students with regard to psychological well being in rural area.Keywords

Single parenting is a situation in which one of the two individuals either mother or father is solely responsible for the upbringing of their children. Thus the study is taken up with an objective to know the problems and mental health of the single parent and to know the relationship between age, SES with mental health. The data was collected from four villages of Dharwad taluk during the year 2017-18. The samples were 15 female single parents from each village who were randomly selected. Totally the sample comprised of 60 female single parents. The criterion for selecting the female single parent was that they should have at least one child/ children aged from 0-25 years. The data was collected through door-to-door survey using the tools like the structured questionnaire was used to collect personal information and problem faced by the single parents. The socio-economic status of the family was assessed by using socio-economic status scale developed by Agaarwal et al. (2005) and mental health inventory developed by Jagadish and Srivastava (1983) to know the mental health status of the individual. The results revealed that that 70 per cent reported death of their spouse was one of the reasons for being single parent followed by divorce in 16.67 per cent and 13.33 percent were separated. About 93.33 per cent of single parents faced financial problems while 53.33 per cent of them were getting support from their parents followed by relatives, children, friends, co-workers. In the present study majority of the single parents had poor mental health (48.33 %) and very poor mental health (40 %). There was significant relationship and association between the age, SES with mental health.Keywords

A study was conducted on urban and rural PUC students in the age group of 16-18 years who were randomly selected from four science stream coaching institutes of Dharwad taluk and three science stream coaching institutes of Tanakpur taluk respectively. Sample selection included random selection of 10 to 15 per cent students from each class (PUC-I & PUC-II) which consisted of total 592 students out of which 312 students from Dharwad and 280 students from Tanakpur science coaching institutes. PUC students were assessed on identity development, selfconcept and Big Five personality factors by using standardized scale. The results of the present study revealed differential effect of individual and familial factors on identity development of urban and rural PUC students from Dharwad and Tanakpur. A significant association was observed between identity development of Dharwad and Tanakpur PUC students from both urban and rural areas. Majority of Dharwad students (61.25 %) from urban area were in an average level of identity development while, majority from Tanakpur (61.18 %) were in high level of identity development. Among rural PUC students, more than half of Dharwad (51.97 %) and Tanakpur (53.08 %) PUC students were in low and high level of identity development respectively. A significant association was observed between identity development of Dharwad and Tanakpur PUC students from both urban and rural areas.Keywords

Identity refers to the constellation of one's goals, values and beliefs to feelings of solidarity with groups to which one belongs, or to roles that one plays within the larger social structure. A firmly established identity provides a sense of uniqueness to an individual. Parents act as a primary socialization agent in a family who may enhance or deteriorate identity development of adolescents through their way of nurturing. Self-concept also plays a major role in identity formation of adolescents where, an individual with a clear sense of self and positive outlook possess unique identity. Various theories have also been proposed regarding self-concept, parenting and identity development, viz.,Higgins's self-discrepancy theory, Self-determination theory, Super's self-concept theory, Nanoanalytical theory, Attachment theory etc. Intervention programmes also proves to be effective in enhancing adolescents selfconcepts and identity development.Keywords
