Abstract

This study examines the attitudes of two law university library users towards the use of OPAC/Web OPAC and located in Andhra Pradesh. The sample population was chosen by using the convenience sample method. The investigators distributed 200 sample instruments to members of the teaching staff, research scholars, LLM students and LLB students and received 123 fiilled-in usable questionnaires making a moderate response rate of 61.5% which was found adequate for the analysis. Major findings of the study include: 15(12.3%) respondents did not use OPAC/Web OPAC. 62(50%) of the respondents were using OPAC/Web OPAC not very much and 51(41.8%) respondents stated that their use of the OPAC/Web OPAC was not guided by library OPAC/Web OPAC. The analysis found that respondents have positive attitudes about the use of OPAC/Web OPAC service and facility.

Abstract

We are living in the Information Knowledge Era (IKE), which is fast changing. In this rapidly changing IKE, knowledge and information are the most vital resources, for the growth and development of both individuals and organizations. These resources are assets, which are available in the form of databases, knowledge bases and in the minds of people and organizations. Very often one part of the organization repeats the work of another part, simply because, they are not aware of what is going on in the other parts of the organization. Hence it is important to know what the knowledge management assets are? And how to manage and make the best use of these assets to reap maximum returns.

In the age of IKE librarians' role is also changing and they are posed with many challenges. Some times we wonder as to what the role of a librarian is in a KM library. This article finds answers from some of the common doubts that arise in our mind. The paper also presents the shift from the conventional role to the fast changing KM roles of a librarian. It also emphasizes on how information management is the domain of librarians and KM is only an extension, where IT is the enabler.

This paper on 'strategies for effective library and information centre management' is a survey of the librarians of engineering colleges in Karnataka. It reports the results of the opinions of the librarians regarding the strategies for location of libraries, factors influencing their use, effective management of library and information centre, to meet the goals and objectives, to integrate and coordinate the diverse activities of libraries, to become a part of engineering college library network. The results of the study are reported using statistical techniques.

Abstract

This paper titled "Expectations and Perceptions of the Users of the National Law School of India University Library (NLSIU): A study" is a case study of the NLSIU Library located at Bangalore, the silicon valley of India. This Law School is one of the unique autonomous bodies in the field. The perceptions of the library users towards the facilities and services offered are presented in an objective manner. The study reveals that majority of the users are male and students form the largest number of library visitors. Most of the users are under 21–25 years age group. Many of them visit the library to prepare for projects and seminars. They find the library ambience homely and tidy. Journals, which are used most by the users, are published mainly from India and U.S.A. "Economic and Political Weekly" (India) is the highest ranking journal. They find quality of the book collection in this library excellent. The NLSIU Library users 'Google' is the most preferred search engine for literature search.

Abstract

It is the first time in the annals of Mysore University Library, University of Mysore, that an attempt is made by the investigators to explore what image the users have about the library. The application of strategic marketing methods to libraries and information centers is however of recent origin. The outcome of such studies, if found positive helps in attracting good funding. It also leads to the most effective way of managing a library besides enhancing its efficiency. The results show that the image and familiarity of this library among the users is somewhat favorable and most of them know a fair amount about it. A great majority of users seek the help of the library professionals to look for documents More than 50% of the respondents are satisfied with the library services. The users also suggest that they need more books followed by journals.

Abstract

The postindustrial society is marked as the information centered society. The emergence of Information Communication Technologies (ICTS) has posed both challenges and opportunities for the present generation. The societies such as Indian, which missed out the great revolutions in the past, are able to catch up with the present IT revolution. But in most of the Latin American, African and the South Asian countries scenario is pretty dim. It is due to the emergence of the digital divide. This divide is similar to the economic divide in the past of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. All over the world efforts are on to bridge this digital divides. The prominent players hail from all the three sectors viz.: public, private and the social sector. Thos article presents the current scenario and some of the strategies adopted in overcoming the digital divide. It emphasis the roles of major institutions, NGO's and some of the countries which are constantly working toward the solving this problem. This article benefits the student and faculty of IT, information science and those who are generally interested in understanding the Digital Divide.

Abstract

This review paper highlights the very special „niche segment‟ to which the aerospace scientists and engineers belonging to different countries right across the globe occupy. Highlighting aviation as one of the most significant technological marvels of our times, the paper discusses in detail the various significant aspects related to what aerospace engineering is all about and how the electronic media has come in a big way to support scholarly communication within this „niche‟ aerospace engineering community. The paper also reviews the impact of Internet, the availability of high-speed networks which has enabled these scientists and engineers have access to electronic journals right at their desktops and also keep track of the global R&D happenings in their respective field of specialization. Various studies conducted (as indicated in this paper) illustrate how „electronic journals‟ are highly important to the aerospace scientists and engineers. Important studies in this connection have also proved that scientists are willing to pay a high price in their time to spend many hours reading electronic scientific literature. Many relevant studies also have revealed that the information that a scientist or engineer gets from refereed journals has greatly resulted in their improved performance. The review paper also touches upon key aspects like: (a) Distinguishing engineers from scientists, (b) Their differences in knowledge diffusion, (c) Their communication behaviours, (d) Their information seeking behaviour, (e) The aerospace engineering community in particular and the (g) the importance of scientific communication for advances in aerospace engineering and the need for electronic information resources.

Abstract

This paper entitled "Reading habits of public library users: A survey" is the result of a study carried out by the authors in two branches public library of Mysore city. Totally 200 readers were surveyed with the help of a structured questionnaire to know if Mysorians have the habit of reading or not."Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, writing an exact man" is a very popular quotation of the great philosopher Sir Francis Bacon. Abstract

The coming of the Internet has transformed the way scientific communication among the scientists and engineers in general across the world and more specifically amongst the aerospace scientists and engineers. The Net has changed the way scientists look for information, the various means by which they get their required information from the Internet and most importantly how much they depend on the Internet for their scientific pursuit. In this information age, it is practically impossible for a scientist or engineer to carry out his/her research work without using network and Internet technologies. They use these electronic tools for accessing electronic information resources in the form of e-journals related to their field of specialization right at their desktops through their organization's networking facilities. We highlight the role of the Net in spreading scholarly scientific communication. The major findings of this survey study from a total of 583 questionnaires distributed to selected Indian aerospace organizations in Bangalore reveals that: (a) The most popular place of use of the Internet amongst the aerospace scientists and engineers is 'Right at their Desktop', followed by 'Access from their Homes'. Access from 'Cyber Caf6', 'The Organization's Library', 'Access from other Departments' and 'Access from another Library' occupy lesser priorities, (b) The overall average monthly usage of the Internet gets a mean value of 84.19 which implies that on an average the selected aerospace organizations are familiar and have had exposure to the Net for at least 7.01 years, (c) The main purpose of using the Internet amongst this 'niche' aerospace engineering community happens to be for 'Sending and receiving e-mails', followed by 'Collecting general information' and 'Accessing e-Resources (e-Joumals, e-Books and e- Databases)', and 'Download software for scientific research', (d) The main motivation factors to use the Net amongst this community are 'To update self-knowledge in the area of research' followed by 'User-friendly search engines' and 'Easy access to resources'. (e) The most frequently used search engines are 'Google', followed by 'Yahoo' and 'Alta Vista', (f) The most popular scientific web sites accessed and used are 'Google Scholar', followed by 'Google Book' and 'SCIRUS'. (g) The biggest bottleneck faced by these scientists and engineers while accessing the Net are 'Very poor Internet connectivity (low speed)' followed by 'Getting irrelevant information' and 'Internet charges are high'.

Abstract

At present most scientists have access to full-text e-joumals. In most cases, this facility is provided right at the desktop. In this paper, we present a case study of full-text e-journal use patterns among the scientists and engineers at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), a constituent of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The faciUty at NAL is provided right at the desktop through the NAL-CSIR-NISCAIR e-conglomerate. National Institute of Science Communication and Information Research (NISCAIR) provides e-access to more than 4040 world-class e-journals to all science and technology personnel of the CSIR fraternity. This CSIRNISCAIR initiative allows any scientist in any CSIR Laboratory to access this electronic information to keep abreast of the technological developments in his / her area of specialization. The analysis of data of the full-text ejoumal use patterns covers the period 2005 to 2007. The major findings highlighted are: (a) the mean number (per-month) of full-text downloads for the above three years was found to be different through Kruskal Wallis test of 'One Way Analysis of Variance' at 1% level of significance and (b) when the Chi-Square test was applied to test whether there is independence between the years and the publishers, the calculated value of Chi-Square was 845, which is highly significant. Hence we conclude that for the full-text downloads data, the years and the publishers are not independent. This Chi- Square test was carried out for only those publishers (8 in number) for which the data was available for all the three years (2005-2007).

Abstract

Education aims to impart knowledge and prepare good citizens library and information centres are the repositories of knowledge and form an integral part of education. Libraries have a long history starting with chained and closed-access libraries of earlier times to the present - day hybrid, digital, virtual libraies that use latest technologies for the provision of information through various services. With advent of computer, the nature of libraries has changed dramatically. Today, university libraries are on the threshold of facing new challenges of the new century. There is need for rejuvenating the LIS professionals in India in the light of the happening at the international level.
