E-learning refers to learning that is delivered or enabled via electronic technology. Agent-based E-learning system retrieves relevant learning materials, process and analyzes data to enable meaningful E–learning recommendations to instructors and learners. Personalized agent-based E-learning system provide a set of personalization functionalities such as personalizing learning plans, learning materials, test and necessary instant messages etc., to online learners. In recent years, numerous efforts have been made in the direction of automating the content acquisition and distribution, but personalized content delivery, access and interaction remain research challenges. The objective of this paper is to provide a service-oriented architecture for personalized agent based e-learning system using web services. This architecture includes a teacher agent and learner agent. These agents achieve personalization in E-learning system and as a consequence to improve E-learning effectiveness dramatically. The proposed architecture is a layered architecture that consists of user layer, service registry layer, application layer and data layer. The various web services are identified and implemented in the proposed system. The proposed architecture using web services increases the efficiency and learning in terms of reusability, interoperability and accessibility. E-learning using agents and web services make the architecture more scalable and efficient. Keywords

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web services are being critically considered by most organizations today. The adoption of SOA and Web services has gained momentum after the standardization of various aspects including management of change and interface versions. Services evolve dynamically to address the changing business context. This evolution leads to multiple service versions. Service versioning becomes a priority to minimize / eliminate the impact of changes made to the service, on the service consumer’s experience. Service versioning is an unavoidable reality, as the service provider cannot expect all service consumers to change every time a service changes, at least in the short-term. It is a challenging problem to manage services whose interfaces are changing, especially in the situation where the number of consumers for the service is significant. This paper addressed the problems of service versioning from the perspectives of both the service provider and the service consumer. It discussed the change management concerns, highlights the issues involved in service versioning and approaches to accomplish versioning successfully. It also discussed the architectural impact of versioning and the different techniques required to handle the impact. It presented web service notification, a solution for web service versioning, which would address difficulty of managing and governing such a large number of services on service-oriented architecture. An e-learning application was designed with web service notification and multiple versions that provides better flexibility and more reusability.

Nowadays, E-learning has become the major trend of the development of education. E-learning system with personalization leads efficient learning results among different learners and their needs actively. However, the problem in the existing e-learning systems is weak semantic learning resources. Hence, it is proposed to design a personalized e-learning system with web services and semantic web technology. Web services ease the pain of managing different e-learning applications and make them to play together, hence, achieve higher level of interoperability. The semantic web provides distributed information with well-defined meaning, understandable for different learners. The proposed system consists of four types of web services – annotation, notification, personalization, authentication, etc. Using this system, the learners should be able to provide individually optimized access to content by taking the individual needs. Designing e-learning system using semantic web and web services enhances the learning process in an effective and dynamic way. Keywords
