FMS layout ordering is key issue to yield desirable productivity in manufacturing system. This paper discusses the various layout design in flexible manufacturing system(FMS). The aim of this facility layout problem is to determine the sequence of machines and their configuration, to reduce the number of traversal for a part from machine to machine in such a manner that ordering of machines influence the transportation cost.. Genetic algorithms (GA) provide a powerful search technique with parallel processing of a large number of solutions, while coding the parameters instead of working on the parameters directly. The search is random due to the probabilistic transition rules. The GA operators encourage production of stronger children through the mating of stronger parents as the solution moves through generations. Crossover ensures exploitation while mutation ensures exploration of the solution space without a complete enumeration. This paper furnish the design, development and testing of a Genetic Algorithm to solve the FMS layout problems The proposed method applied to a case problem containing the details like no of machines, inter slot distance between machines, frequency of trips between machines and variable material handling cost. The problem is tested for various iterations and different size of populations involved in genetic algorithm. A simulation programme is developed in c++ for evaluating the problem. Keywords

FMS’s seems to be a very promising technology as they provide flexibility, which is essential for many manufacturing companies. FMS can yield a number of dissimilar jobs simultaneously. Each part requires different operations in a certain sequence and workstations can typically perform a variety of operations. In this paper, multi-objective optimization related to FMS scheduling which act as a constraint in configuring the loop layout in optimum manner by various evolutionary algorithms such as Metaheuristics like PSO, SA etc. The first one is connected with batch scheduling problem (BSP). The next objective is emphasis on determination of optimum machine sequence with minimum total transportation cost. In this paper the authors made an attempt to consider machine arrangements in an optimum sequence with flexible batch scheduling as constraints in an FMS. The various loop layout problems are tested for enactment of objective function with respect to computational time and number of iterations involved in SA and PSO. A necessary code is generated in C++ and the code is run by the IDE tool in which C++ compiler used as plug in. The results of the above optimization algorithms are tabulated and it is concluded that for make span PSO is better than SA, whereas for total transportation cost SA is better than PSO.Keywords

Facility allocation and layout design plays a key role to achieve high revenue in current industrial sector. This paper conveys the design of single row layout in FMS in an optimum manner. The objective of single row layout problem is the allocation of the ordering of machines around the facility configuration, to reduce the total number of traversals for a part family. The clearance between the machines and material handling cost between the machines also considered in design of SR layouts. This work details the design, development and testing of Genetic Algorithm (GA), Partial Swarm Method(PSM) to solve the single row layout problems. The proposed methods validated and tested with randomly generated problem instances. Keywords
