The study aims to understand the distribution of groundwater quality in coastal regions from Injambakkam-Thiruvanmyiur areas, Chennai. Groundwater samples were collected from the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. The objectives of the study are to determine the groundwater quality characteristics such as pH, alkalinity, electrical conductivity, chloride, hardness, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen and map the spatial distribution of groundwater quality in the study area by using open source software Quantum GIS (QGIS). The physico-chemical parameters and the quality of the water vary with space and thus mapping it with the GIS is an efficient way to draw conclusions about the study area. Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation method was used to create various raster maps which show the spatial distribution. With the present study it is found that, most of the regions in the southern part of the study area have poor to very poor quality based on the Water Quality Index (WQI).Keywords

Ground water samples from Cooum belt areas were collected and analyzed for their physico-chemical characteristics. Results obtained were inferred based on the drinking water quality standards of IS 10500:1991. Out of the ten locations chosen, Anna Nagar and Pachayappas were found to possess high total dissolved solids values. Nitrate was found higher in ground water drawn from sources of Fort St. George and Pachayappas. Possibility of pollution of ground water resources in Cooum belt areas is indicated by the study.Keywords

Value engineering is a methodology used to analyze the function of the goods and services and to obtain the required functions of the user at the lowest total cost without reducing the necessary quality of performance. Many a time, Value Engineering (VE) is confused with cost cutting exercises in construction industry. The essential difference between conventional cost cutting and VE is that it involves reducing the cost by improving the functionality through lesser consumption of energy in terms of manpower, materials and machines. In the initial stages VE was used by production engineers for reducing the cost of manufacture. However, it was found that the benefit of VE is much greater if multidisciplinary teams of engineers were involved which would also influence the design team that is normally the case in constructionKeywords
