Abstract

Introduction: Law has not tried to define death. By Black's law dictionary, death means "cessation of life or ceasing to exist". Medico-legal definition of death is 'permanent and irreversible cessation of functions of the three interlinked vital systems of the body which are called the tripod of life, namely the nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems'.

Objectives: 1. To study the autopsy diagnosis of cause of death. 2. To compare the clinical and autopsy diagnosis of cause of death. 3. To evaluate the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of cause of death.

Results: During the present study period, a total of 100 medicolegal autopsies were conducted. Out of these, 58 (58%) cases were Road Traffic Accident (RTA), burns cases were 24(24%) followed by poisoning cases 8 (8%). There were 4 cases of fall from height (4%), snake bite 3 (3%) cases and 3 (3%) hanging cases.

Discussion: It was observed that in 6 (10%) cases out of 58 cases of the total RTA cases, there was discordance regarding the opinion of cause of death. In the other 52 cases i.e. in 90% of the cases there was complete agreement with respect to the cause of death.

Conclusion: From this study it is concluded that medico legal autopsies revealed many unexpected findings that are of clinical importance, and a continued emphasis on autopsy correlation is necessary for the improvement of the quality of patient care.

Abstract

Vitex trifolia Linn. belonging to the family of Verbenaceae is distributed throughout India in tropical and subtropical regions and has been used by the tribal people for various disorders in traditional and folk medicine. Height of the plant 1-3.5 meter. Flowers are appearing in summer or late summer, and 6-12 inch long. The preliminary phytochemical screening of various extracts of leaf revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents like carbohydrates, flavanoids, proteins, aminoacids, tannins, phytosterols, saponins essential oils, halimane type diterpenes, vitetrifolins .The plant is a component of a number of commercially available herbal formulations and has also shown potential as an effective bio-control agent. Leaves are considered as antiseptic, aromatic, febrifuge, anodyne, diuretic, emmenagogue and fruit as nervine, cephalic, emmenagogue, anthelmintic. Roots are used to treat febrifuge, painful inflammations, cough and fever. Flowers are used in treating fever and fruits in amenorrhoea The plant is known to possess various active constituents like carbohydrate, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, protein and amino acids, tannins, phytosterols and saponins The plant has been screened for the trypanocidal, antioxidant hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, tracheospasmolytic anticancer, antimitotic and wound healing activity. The present review is therefore, an effort to give a detailed survey of the literature on the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Vitex trifolia.

Abstract

Sida rhombifolia is a very small perennial or annual plant which grows in tropical and subtropical areas. It belongs to the family Malvaceae. Malvaceae is a cosmopolitan family of herbs, shrubs and trees. Modern research carried out on the Malvaceae plants revealed that most of the plants belonging to this family are medicinally important as they contain biologically active compounds. Sida rhombifolia has considerable reputation for its medicinal value in traditional medicine. It grows upto 50-120cm in height. It is commonly called Bala or Atibala. It has been reported the presence of steroids, terpenoids, alkaloids, phenol, saponins, glycosides, tannins in it. Its leaves, stem, bark and ischolar_mains are usable parts. The stems are rich in mucilage and are employed internally as an emollient, diuretic, and as a febrifuge with pepper. The ischolar_mains are bitter, cooling, and anthelmintic. It possesses antiseptic, wound-healing activities and it is also used for the treatment of diarrhoea, cough and ulcer, and in the treatment of dysenteries, tuberculosis, urogenital diseases and for a skin application in chicken pox. It is an Ayurvedic herb, used in the treatment of a variety of conditions including female infertility. It is having antioxidant, anti-inflammatory antimicrobial, anthelminthic, antifungal, and anti rheumatic properties. The present review is therefore, an effort to give a detailed survey of the literature on its pharmacognostic, pharmacological properties.
