Abstract

Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth belongs to the family Fabaceae (formerly Leguminaceae) and a member of subfamily Mimosaceae native to India. The various parts of this plant possess a wide range of pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-arthritic, antiasthmatic, antioxidant, antidiarrhoeal, anticonvulsant, mast cell stabilization, anti-anaphylactic, steroidogenic, nootropic, antifertility, antihistaminic, antitumor, antiulcer etc. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the diverse pharmacological activities of Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth and collate the reported work by the researchers on this plant. The outcome claims that Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth is a highly important medicinally active plant.

Abstract

The practice of traditional medicine is based on hundreds of years of belief and observations which predate development and spread of modern medicine. Traditional medicines play an important role in health care not only in India but also in several other countries like China, Japan, Thailand, Bangladesh, etc. In India there had been a long practice of using folk medicine by 'Vaidyas', and natives of remote villages, during preindependence era. The knowledge transmitted from generation to generation are described, with their local names whatever, availability, also habit, part used, methods of preparation and administration for treating diseases. But due to the modern civilization these traditional medicines are disappearing gradually from the society, although they might have high potential to become effective formulations if thorough research is carried out. A few of them still survive mostly in the remote areas of the country. This survey has been conducted to record the plants known as folk medicine by the natives of Tripura.
