Probiotics are live microorganisms when administered in adequate amount confer health benefit to the host. Extensive usage of probiotics in dairy as a starter in preparation of cheese and other dairy products has become popular in the recent past. The representatives of probiotics mainly include Lactic Acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. johnsonii, L. gasseri, L. casei, L. rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium longum, B. breve, B. infantis, B. thermophillum, B. pseudolongum and others. A number of animal studies conducted by various research groups indicated that the probiotics possess potential anticancer effects. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most devastating diseases causing high morbidity and mortality among human in most of the urban, eastern and western parts of the world. Oral intake of large number of substances among human perhaps act as mutagenic compounds resulting in change of native microbiota of intestine and could induce cancer. In the present review, the beneficial effects of probiotics in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been discussed drawing observations from an ongoing related research work in our laboratory. The present article also focuses to describe the beneficial applications of Lactobacillus spp. particularly in human. Keywords

Crowd density monitoring is crucial to many applications, such as guiding tour and crowd control in commercial environments. Video or image-based solutions are high cost and cannot be applied in low-light environments. For some Radio Frequency (RF) based technologies, some people have to carry certain wireless transceivers; others also need to collect abundant finger print. These approaches are high cost and impractical. In this paper, we propose a crowd monitoring approach using mobile phone. Our design of crowd detection adopts clustering methods. Feature sets derive from Wi-Fi signal strength measurements. We use Bluetooth readings analyzing to estimate crowd density. We implement our design on off-the-shelf smart phones and evaluate its performance via extensive experiments in typical real-world scenes. Results of experiment verify the feasibility and the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Keywords

The speech quality assessment is categorized into two: subjective evaluation and objective evaluation. The subjective evaluation is mainly based upon the perceptual quality of the artificial speech which is carried out by means of listener’s rating. But, here the drastic variation at the points of concatenation is not taken into account. Hence, objective measures are the right alternative for evaluation. Here, the time domain parameters like energy, intonation and duration are analyzed for the synthetic speech. The rating is given on the scale of 1 for the variations and this is deduced from the subjective evaluation results, as the overall quality cannot be purely based on objective measures. The synthetic speech is synthesized by a phoneme based Unit Selection Synthesizer (USS) consisting of three hours speech corpus. The objective evaluation is assigned a value of 1, among which more priority is given to energy as 0.7 in 1 and less priority is given to duration as 0.3 in 1, based on its contribution to the quality and variations. Intonation is not considered, as its characteristics are not revealed at phoneme level. Finally the objective MOS 0.704 is reduced from the actual MOS 2.75 and the overall rating obtained is 2.046.Keywords

A telemetry services over the Inter- net allow physiotherapists to engage in remote consultation with patients at their remote area, improving the quality of care and reducing costs. Traditional visual approaches, such as webcams and videophones, are limited in terms of precision of assessment and support for assistance with exercises. In this paper, we present a Telemonitoring System (TMS) that enhances video interaction with IoT technology to monitor the position of the body of patients in space and provide smart data to physiotherapists and users. We give an overview of the architecture of the TMS and evaluate (i) its usability based on a number of interviews and focus groups with stakeholders, and its technical efficiency based on a series of measurements. From this evaluation, we derive a number of challenges for further improvement of the TMS and outline a possible solution based on a microservices architecture.
