Elastomers are special type of polymers, which are made of long, flexible or string like molecules. Each chain is joined to the nearby chains, known as crosslinks. The process known as Vulcanization adds these crosslinks. The excellent properties of application of these materials make them applicable in variety of fields. Depending on the component application and the type of hyperelastic material thus used, appropriate tests are conducted and the stress-strain data is recorded and the materials constants are calculated using the curve fitting procedures provided by the finite element software. These constants are further used in the non-linear analysis of a trunk door seal. The analysis showed that the stress in the seal is 1.286 N/mm2 for a deformation of about 63mm when the door operates.

Nano surfaces are the surfaces having geometrical parameters in nano scale. The enhanced geometrical, physical and chemical properties of nano surfaces play an important role in redefining the functionality of the products. The concept of redefining the function represents a shift of emphasis from manufacturing towards function or performance. To some extent the manufacturing requirements of the surface has masked the more relevant functional parameters. Ideally, in order to be of use, the definition and operation should mimic the function. Parameters such as Ra are simply descriptions of the waveform. Further, surface finish is critical in vertical flow of, say, electricity or heat because it determines the number and shape of contacts. This paper discusses the properties and the processing techniques to produce nano surfaces. The process variables of these processing techniques can be controlled and manipulated to suit the functionality of the product under production. The processing techniques include conventional machining, advanced non-conventional machining and advanced nano-surface engineering techniques. Finally the applications of nano surfaces in different fields are also discussed.- Analysis of Flexible Mirror

Flexible mirrors widely used for wave front correction, can be deformed to any desired complex shape through the application of control voltages. Finite element method has been used for computing the value and location of voltages. The thickness of the mirror being very small, it behaves nonlinearly. The paper presents the method of computation of influence matrix to relate deformed shape with the pressure to be applied to obtain the deformed shape.- Micro-Engineering-An Overview

Rapid Prototyping (RP) generally refers to techniques that produce 3D prototypes by gradual addition of solid material layer by layer, differing fundamentally from material removal conventional manufacturing techniques. RP is emerging as a powerful tool in product development process. Rapid Tooling (RT) is an offshoot of RP process, which enables to make batch quantity production of components that could be used for functional testing or directly in the product assembly. Several RP processes are available, out of which Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process is chosen for Direct Rapid Tooling (DRT) development. The Direct Rapid Tooling can be developed for injection moulding, investment casting, die casting and forming tool applications. This could also be used for several other manufacturing requirements. This paper deals with the production of forming tools with complex 3D surfaces using DMLS technology. The forming tools developed were successfully used for producing sheet metal aluminum components to the required geometrical accuracies for Aerospace applications.Keywords

Generally, Prototypes & injection mould toolings are produced by conventional, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining & electrical discharge machining processes. Making moulds by these methods is slow and expensive for low batch quantities. Product complexity is increasing & product cycles are growing ever shorter Therefore Rapid Prototyping (RP) tooling fabrications should be considered for projects in which the reduction of time to market is important, for prototypes and short to medium volume production runs.
At least six different Rapid Prototyping technologies are commercially available in the market. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is one such Rapid Prototyping technology for producing prototypes & toolings for injection moulding & investment casting processes using metal powder (Bronze Nickel). EOSINT M250 machine from M/s EOS Gmbh-Germany is a direct metal laser-sintering machine.
Each manufacturing process has its advantages and limitations from the point of accuracy, shape, surface finish & cost. This paper deals with the brief description of EOSINT M250 RP machine, process, design rules for parts, accuracy surface finish & geometry of parts that are best suited for DMLS technology from the point of cost and time.

The present study was carried out to analyse and evaluate the groundwater quality for two different seasons in Nambiyar river basin of Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, India. The parameters studied were pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Sodium, Potassium, Nitrate, Fluoride, Sulphate and Bicarbonate. Correlation coefficient studies have been carried among all possible pairs of 13 physiochemical parameters. Correlation coefficients were determined to identify the highly correlated and interrelated water quality parameters. Regression equations were formulated for highly correlated water quality parameters. Piper and Multi-rectangular diagram have been used to identify the water type of the study area. The water type in the study area was found to be mixed Ca2+-Mg2+-Cl- in both monsoon and summer seasons. However, in summer season some samples have shown mixed Na+-HCO3- type.Keywords

The cognitive appreciation of seismic risk among the local population is one of the key drivers in the adoption of guidelines issued for earthquake-resistant masonry construction. The present study gives a broader perspective on the cognitive vulnerability that exists among the local population in understanding and adopting the proposed earthquake-resistant construction guidelines based on a detailed evaluation of the prevailing practices at two regions in Kerala, India. The exercise was carried out among 197 houses located in the above regions, which included both recently built homes and those with exposure to earlier earthquakes. The study highlights the need for evolving technology-supported intelligent interactions that would help the stakeholders take appropriate decisions on various disaster-resistant practices.Keywords
