Introduction: Beets are good sources of folate, potassium, vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, as well as nitrates. Beet juice may increase exercise endurance, improve blood flow, and help lower blood pressure. Beetischolar_main contains inorganic nitrate (NO3-) as the main bioactive for cardiovascular and endurance exercise interactions; and the pigment class of betalains, predominately betanin and vulgaxanthin; and also phenolics.Endurance is the abitity to withstand stress or exertion and remain active for a long period of time. Physical endurance is the time span between the initiation of physical activity by an individual and the termination because of exhaustion.Aim: The aim of present study was to investigate the physical endurance activity of fruit extract of Beta vulgaris in experimental mice.
Materials and Methods: Dry extract of Beta vulgaris was obtained from Green Chem.Swiss Albino mice of either sex weighing between 25 to 30 gm were taken for the purpose. Approval from Animal Ethics Committee was taken before starting the experiment. The animals were maintained under standard conditions in an animal house approved by the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision on Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA).The Swiss albino mice either sex were divided into five groups each composed of six animals-Control (normal saline), Standard (caffeine 30 mg/kg p.o), Low (100 mg/kg p.o.), Medium (200 mg/kg p.o.) and High dose (400 mg/kg p.o.). In Rota Rod Model, after administration of the drug, one hour later all the animals were placed on rotating rod and observed for fall off time.
Result and conclusion: The time spent on Rota rod in drug treated group was found to be increased as compared to control group. It shows increase in physical endurance power of the extract in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Menopause is defined retrospectively as the time of the final menstrual period, followed by 12 months of amenorrhea. Menopause is caused by the aging of ovaries leading to a decline in the production of ovarian gonadotropins oestrogen and progesterone. The deficiency of these hormones elicits various somatic, vasomotor, sexual, and psychological symptoms that impair the overall quality of life (QoL) of women. Hence the study was done to assess the effect of postmenopausal symptoms and their impact on women's quality of life. METHODOLOGY: A cross sectional study was done for the duration of six months in Employee State Insurance Corporation Hospital. The data such as the socio-demographic information and the menstruation status and the experience of the symptoms, as were tested in the Menopause Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) questionnaire, were collected from each patient. The women who were included in the study were divided into two groups as the early postmenopausal and the late postmenopausal groups. All statistical analyses were carried out using Graph Pad Prism 7.1. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 200 patients met the inclusion criteria.Among the patients psychosocial symptoms were more prominent among early menopausal women when compared to late menopausal women .The vasomotor symptoms(72%),psychosocial symptoms(39.5%)physical symptoms(50.5%),sexual symptoms(26%) were prevalent and showed significance in both groups of post-menopausal women. CONCLUSION : The age of the postmenopausal women was not proportional to any symptomatic changes to women. Among categorized symptoms of postmenopausal women in MENQOL Questionnaire, physical symptoms (low back ache, joint pain etc.,) vasomotor symptoms (eg hot flushes etc.,), psychosocial (poor memory etc.,) were prevalent and shown to have negative effect on quality life of the post-menopausal women. Keywords

The Fourth Conference of Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) was organised at Mangalore University on 28th and 29th January, 2012. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri D.V. Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the conference as well as science exhibition. In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister urged the scientific community to pursue the challenges and convert the challenges into opportunities in the present competitive world. He mentioned challenges that the state is facing, especially in drought management, dry land development and resource conservation. Furthermore, he stressed the need of effective utilization of available water resources for agriculture as well as storage and processing of agricultural products. He said that only a quarter of the agricultural land in the state is irrigated and hence it is necessary to develop drought resistant variety of crops for dry land cultivation. He exhorted scientific fraternity to come up with tangible solutions to the challenges in the field of marine fisheries management, solid waste management, renewable energy and climate change. He concluded his speech by announcing special fellowship scheme to encourage students who opt for basic science subjects at degree, PG and doctoral levels.- National Seminar on Geospatial and Ecological Mapping of Biodiversity: Tools and Techniques
