Abstract

Globally, World health statistics 2012 have reported that one in three adults has raised blood pressure and one in ten adults have diabetes. Present study is a community based cross sectional study, carried out in an urban resettlement colony in Dakshinpuri Extension of South Delhi during the months of March and April 2010 with household as the sampling unit. A total of 389 households were studied. An interview schedule was developed and pre tested consisting of socio-demographic profile and knowledge and practices KAP component. A total of 389 individuals were interviewed. Of the total, 57 % were females and 43% were males. Mean age of the study participants was 40.05 (S.D±15.2 years) with a median per capita income of Rs. 900 per month. More than 80 % of the study participants had heard of the words diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease. Most of the respondents considered that lifestyle plays a role in the development of NCDs. Less than 40 % of the respondents know about the role of nutrition in the development of NCDs. Nearly half of the respondents regarded diabetes and hypertension as a serious illness. According to 68.3 %, 57 % and 69 % of study participants, medical treatment is appropriate for hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease. The rest resorted to untrained health care providers. Prevalence of self reported diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease were 13.5 %, 20.6 % and 3.9 % respectively.

Abstract

Undernutrition interferes with growth and development of a child and may predispose to infection and/or chronic disease. The present study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status of under five children by the 2006 WHO growth standards; Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) which is a single aggregate indicator of undernutrition was calculated and the perception of caregivers about undernutrition and child development of a child were assessed. A cross sectional study was conducted in rural children in North India. Anthropometry was done according to the standard procedures. Overall, 938 children were included in the study. The prevalence of under nutrition was 25.3 % (22.4-28.1). CIAF showed a higher prevalence of undernutrition with 53.1% of the children suffering from anthropometric failure. The prevalence of stunting was highest in 36-47 months. There was a significant association between undernutrition and low literacy status of mother, duration of pregnancy, administration of pre lacteal feeds and time of initiation of weaning. More than half of the caregivers perceived that undernutrition was due to disease (55.5%), lack of food (35.5%) or congenital (31.6%). There was a high prevalence of undernutrition among rural under five children in North India. There was a lacuna in knowledge of caregivers about the causes of undernutrition and delayed development.

Abstract

The paper "A study of Biometric techniques and its implication in Educational Sector" tells about all the major techniques that are studied under Biometrics in detail. As these techniques are widely implemented in various sectors for different purposes, in this study, Educational sector is emphasized.
A survey has been conducted in some institutes with a questionnaire which reflects some of the facts like what percentage of institutes are implementing it, for how long they are using it etc. All these facts are analyzed as represented as graphs.
The study reveals that which out of all the techniques studied, is most widely used in Educational Sectors (like schools, colleges, institutes etc). It also emphasizes the major purpose for which it is being used. And in case, there are some problem in the technique what improvements are needed. It also includes, if given an opportunity, which alternative technique will suit their requirement and they wish to implement in future.

Abstract

Many chronic neurodegenerative disorders diseases and systemic amyloidosis, are thought to arise from the misfolding and aggregation of an underlying protein. Recent findings strongly support this hypothesis and have increased our understanding of the molecular mechanism of protein conformational disorders. Genetic mutations are the ischolar_main cause for protein misfolding in rare families, but the majority of patients have variable forms possibly related to environmental factors. Diverse human disorders, including several neurodegenerative. Nanoneuro medicine which means the development of small drug formulations for the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative, inflammatory, infectious, vascular, addictive, behavioral and metabolic disorders of the nervous system, will provide a focus for each of the scientific sessions marked due to deposits of misfolded or aggregated proteins.

Abstract

The data for density (ρ), viscosity (η) and ultrasonic velocity (u) of aqueous solutions of threonine with lactose monohydrate and sucrose have been measured as a function of amino acid concentration at different temperatures. Using these data various interaction parameters viz. adiabatic compressibility (β), molar hydration number (nH), apparent molar compressibility (φ_k), apparent molar volume (φ_v), limiting apparent molar compressibility, limiting apparent molar volume and their constants (S_k,S_v) and viscosity A and B coefficient of Jones-Dole equation. These parameters have been interpreted the molecular interactions in terms of solute-solute and solute-solvent interaction present in the given solutions. Free energies of activation of aqueous amino acids were obtained by application of the transition-state theory to the B-coefficient data and the corresponding activation parameters were given. The Redlich-Kister model was used to correlate the measured properties. It was found that in all cases, the experimental data obtained fitted with the values correlated by the corresponding models very well.

Abstract

Happiness is the most valued virtue of human life as everyone wishes to have a happy, peaceful and contented life. The article provides the overview of the concept of happiness as the subject matter of positive psychology. The article summarizes diverse definitions of happiness given by various authors and philosophers to provide a holistic understanding of the concept. It also covers the sustainable happiness model (Lyubomirsky, Sheldon, & Schkade, 2005) for explaining three major determinants of happiness i.e. set point, circumstances and intentional activities. Finally, the author has suggested some intentional cognitive and behavioural activities for stimulating and enhancing the inner virtue of happiness on the basis of existing researches and his own personal life experiences.

Abstract

Density, ultrasonic velocity for ternary systems (Amino acid+I₂+water) containing Alanine, Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine in aqueous solutions have been measured for several concentrations of amino acids as donors at different temperatures( 303,313,323 K). Using above data apparent molar volume Φ_v partial molar volume Φ_v⁰, adiabatic compressibility β_s, relative adiabatic compressibility β_r relative association parameter RA, and specific impedance Z have been computed. The Δβ_s and β_r exhibit increasing trend of variation with successive increase in amino acid concentration and decreasing trend with increase in temperature in all systems. It is due to overall increase in cohesive forces in the solution. On the other hand above values decrease with increase in temperature is due to thermal rupture of water structure with temperature. Such behavior leads to weak solute-solute and solute-solvent interaction in the system. The parabolic plots emerge into non linear ones with points of inflexion showing no removal of charge but Collisional complex formation. A non linear regression analysis has been made to determine the feed back coefficient of regression and correlation coefficient.
