A study was conducted to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of an irrigation survey method for digging up reliable information to estimate application losses. A sample of 220 tertiary channels was drawn randomly to get information from the growers of the Mirpurkhas subdivision, Jamrao canal irrigation scheme. Pre and post soil moisture status based practical measurements of losses were also carried out at 20 different sites. The results showed that the irrigation methods and soil types have a pronounced effect on application losses whereas crop type has no effect on application efficiency. Drip, sprinkler and furrow irrigation methods showed better performance as compared to other methods (wild flooding, border and basin) used in the study area. The survey based losses results were validated against measured losses whilst values available in literature compared favorably. The overall application losses in the study area were calculated as 23%. The main assumption for the irrigation survey of knowing the irrigation depth (not target depth in accordance with crop actual demand) and cutoff time for a single irrigation event by farmers was almost fulfilled. Based on the encouraging results of this study, it is concluded that irrigation survey studies are useful in understanding the irrigation scheme losses pattern which in turn provide opportunities for improvement.Keywords

Objectives: To present a general overview of rice agronomic practices and transplanting operations by considering the interactions of soil, plant, and machine relationship in line with the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) cultivation practice. Methods: Some of the problems challenging Malaysian rice growers, as well as yield increase and total rice production in the last four decades, were first addressed and discussed. The trend in the world rice production between 1961 and 2014 was used to predict the production in 2020 and to show that Southeast Asian countries are expected to increase their production by 27.2%. Findings: A consistently increasing pattern from 3.1 tons/ha during 1981 to 4.1 tons/ha in 2014 was observed in the rice yield of Malaysia due to the advances in technology and improved farming operations coupled with integrated management and control of resources. Various literatures were reviewed and their findings of the best transplanting practices were summarized to discuss how SRI contributes to the production of higher rice yield with improved transplanting practices through a more effective ischolar_main system. Our review shows that wider spacing, availability of solar radiation, medium temperature, soil aeration, and nutrient supply promote shorter Phyllochrons which increase the number of tillers in rice. In this regard, modification and development of a transplanter that complies with SRI specification require determination of optimum transplanting spacing, seed rate, and planting pattern to significantly improve yield. Improvement: It was concluded that for maximum yield, the SRI method in Malaysia should emphasize on planting of one seedling per hill with space of 0.25 m for optimum water consumption, nutrient and pest management.Keywords

Soybean is one of the most important oilseed crops in the world. Its economic value is based on the concentration of protein and oil produced in the seeds. However, in climate change studies, a crop simulation model like AquaCrop is unable to predict the qualitative yield of crops. Therefore, this study aims to simulate qualitative soybean yield based on regression models between observed dry grain yield (Yd) from 12 treatments as independent variables with their corresponding observed values for oil and protein contents as dependent variables. The P-value (<0.05) and R2 value of the linear regression model showed that oil content was positively regressed with yield, whereas protein content was negatively regressed with yield. On the other hand, predicted values of Yd from the calibrated AquaCrop model over general circulation models based on weighted multi-model ensemble means of five emission scenarios have been used for simulation of soybean oil and protein contents in the future. The results obtained by comparing historical period (1985–2010) to the future period (2020–2039) centred on the 2030s, showed that soybean oil content increased similarly as yield increased in the future period while protein content decreased inversely with yield. Overall, statistical indicators showed that the linear regression model performed well to predict the soybean oil and protein content when AquaCrop model not able to simulate the qualitative yield.Keywords
