Abstract

Hypericum perfortaum L. (Family: Hypericaceae), commonly known as "St. John's Wort" is an important medicinal plant valued for its anti-depressant activity. In the present work role of GA₃ application and time of seed sowing on seed germination of Indian populations of Hypericum perforatum growing in Himachal Pradesh was studied. Seeds were sown on four different dates viz D₁ (February 13), D₂ (March 1), D₃ (March 15) and D₄ (April 1) and treated with different concentration of GA₃ solution. The results showed that seeds sown on 15th March (D₃) gave the maximum germination of 57.15 per cent, shortest peak germination period of 21.55 days (D₃), the earliest germination initiation of 14.4 days and the shortest seed germination period of 33.55 days (D₃). Seeds treated with 150 ppm GA₃ (T₄) gave the highest seed germination percentage (45.63), which is significantly higher than 29.19 per cent seed germination in untreated seeds. The results suggested that time of sowing have a positive effect on seed germination and seedling vigour in Hypericum perforatum L.

Abstract

The present study evaluated different collections of Hypericum perforatum L. growing in Himachal Pradesh for biomass yield and hypericin content. The maximum fresh weight (49.98 g/plant) and dry weight (16.04 g/plant) was recorded in Hyp-V collected from Dochidhar area of Shimla District while Hyp-Vl collected from Koftdhar had maximum height (59.46 em). The maximum hypericin (0.109 percent) was recorded in Hyp-II and Hyp-VlI collections.

Abstract

Indigenous system of Siddha medicine is playing a vital role in the prevention of viral infections such as dengue fever, chikungunya and swine flu. The main aim of the study was to estimate the andrographolide content in aqueous extracts of Siddha formulations containing Andrographis paniculata supplied in Tamilnadu for prevention of dengue fever, chikungunya and swine flu. HPTLC method was adopted for determining the content of and rographolide in Siddha formulations using and rographolide as marker compound. The HPTLC method was performed using HPTLC aluminium sheets precoated with silica gel 60 GF₂₅₄ as stationary phase and ethyl acetate: n-hexane (8.5:1.5 v/v) as the mobile phase. The developed chromatogram was scanned at 233 nm using Camag scanner III. The R_f value of standard and rographolide and andrographolide in the samples were found to be in the range of 0.31 to 0.33.Siddha formulation collected from Siddha VaidhyaNilayam (Dharmapuri Siddha Traditional Formulation) showed more content of andrographolide compared to other Sidhha formulations.

Abstract

Evaluating acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) as the target enzyme for the treatment of hyperlipidemia can lead to the detection of new inhibitors that can potentially be optimized as lipid lowering agents and could also form a novel method of screening a large number of plant constituents. Inhibition of ACC2 may prevent lipid-induced insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, making the enzyme an attractive pharmaceutical target. The crystal structures of the biotin carboxylase (BC) domain of human ACC2 (PDB ID: 3GLK) and carboxyl transferase (CT) domain of human ACC2 (PDB ID: 3FF6) have been selected for molecular targets for Insilico studies of some potent phytochemicals like hydroxycitric acid, terrestrosin, forskolin and EGC. The interactions between the compounds and crystal structures of the enzymes have been performed using Accelrys Discovery Studio 2.1 Ligandfit protocol. Findings from the docking procedure indicate different binding modes of the compounds , further more the studies reveal that EGC was found to be a ideal inhibitor for both ACC2 Domains, thus can be suggested as a better inhibitor for lipid lowering .

Abstract

Network diagnosis, an essential research topic for traditional networking systems, has not received much attention for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Existing sensor debugging tools like sympathy or EmStar rely heavily on an add-in protocol that generates and reports a large amount of status information from individual sensor nodes, introducing network overhead to the resource constrained and usually traffic-sensitive sensor network. We report our initial attempt at providing a lightweight network diagnosis mechanism for sensor networks. We further propose PAD, a probabilistic diagnosis approach for inferring the ischolar_main causes of abnormal phenomena. PAD employs a packet marking scheme for efficiently constructing and dynamically maintaining the inference model. Our approach does not incur additional traffic overhead for collecting desired information. Instead, we introduce a probabilistic inference model that encodes internal dependencies among different network elements for online diagnosis of an operational sensor network system. Such a model is capable of additively reasoning ischolar_main causes based on passively observed symptoms. We can implement the PAD prototype in our sea monitoring sensor network test-bed.

Abstract

A number of organic compounds obtained by chemical synthesis as model compounds have useful antimicrobial activities. Quinazoline ring is an aromatic benzopyrimidine system;many of its derivatives possess interesting biological activities, such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor. In our study, the biological activity of synthesized quinazoline semicarbazone derivatives were characterized by antimicrobial screening against several gram-positive, gram negative bacteria, and fungus. The purity of the synthesized compounds was characterized by physicochemical properties, such as solubility, melting point, and thin layer chromatography (TLC). Elemental analysis for carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen was performed according to standard procedures. The presence of functional groups was analyzed using FT-IR spectra. Molecular structural information for the compounds was analyzed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The wavelengths of maximum absorbance for all the synthesized compounds were measured by UV-Visible spectroscopy. Thereby the chemical structures of the synthesized quinazoline derivatives were confirmed. Antimicrobial screening for all the compounds exhibits characteristic microbial inhibition. A detailed study is in progress to modify the synthetic route, structural activity, and toxicological barriers for the enhanced pharmacological efficiency of synthetic antibiotics.
