Abstract

Yield Management technique is not very old technique to be used by organizations who has to allocate limited resources. This has been used primarily by the aviation industry, later on by other service industry dealing with highly perishable industry. The main objective of this study to introduce fundamental concepts and trade offs of yield management and to describe the relation ship between yield management and newsvendor framework that is an important model for inventory management.

In particular, this study is about the hotel organization to decide whether to sell rooms in advance at relatively low price to leisure travelers or to 'hold out' and wait for sale at a higher price to late booking business travelers.

Abstract

Amphibolites of Precambrian age around Mathurapur occur in two distinct geologic settings i.e., (i) as discordant bodies associated with orthopyroxene-bearing gabbros (massive amphibolite) and (ii) as concordant bands following the general foliation direction (S₂) of the gneissic country rock (schistose amphibolites). Both varieties of amphibolites have igneous parentage and have affinities with high alumina olivine . tholeiite magmatic liquid. The massive amphibolites have formed due to retrograde alteration of orthopyroxene gabbros. whereas, schistose amphibolites probably represent a separate metamorphosed basic magmatic phase in the area.

Abstract

In this paper, robust feature for text-independent speaker recognition has been explored. Through different experimental studies, it is demonstrated that, these robust features captures speaker specific information effectively by using Ergodic hidden Markov models (HMMs). The study on the effect of feature vector size for good speaker recognition demonstrates that, feature vector size in the range of 18-22 can capture speaker specific related information effectively for a speech signal sampled at 16 kHz, it is established that the proposed speaker recognition system using robust features requires significantly less amount of training data during both in the training as well as in testing. Finally, the speaker recognition studies using robust features for different mixtures components, training and test durations have been exploited. We demonstrate the speaker recognition studies on TIMIT database.

Abstract

This investigation deals with the equilibrium and kinetic studies on biosorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions using coconut husk powder in a batch process. The results indicate that biosorption of copper is increased with an increase of biosorbent dosage and decrease with biosorbent size. A significant increase in percentage removal of copper was observed as pH value is increased from 1 to 7 and the percentage removal is decreased beyond pH 7. Increased initial concentration of copper in the aqueous solution results in lower biosorption. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models describe the present data very well indicating favourable biosorption. The biosorption follows pseudo-first-order kinetics.

Abstract

There is a general perception that the phenols being toxic are not amenable to biological degradation. Continuous biodegradation of phenol in synthetic wastewater is carried out in a packed bed bioreactor using immobilized Nocardia hydrocarbonoxydans. Glass beads were used as the carrier particles for cell immobilization. The effect of influent phenol concentration on packed bed bioreactor for phenol biodegradation during start up and at steady state were studied. Almost 99.6% degradation of 200 ppm phenol could be achieved. Percentage degradation of phenol decreased with the increase in influent concentration. The combined effect of higher phenol concentration and volumetric phenol loading might have resulted in lower degradation. Only 58.4% degradation of 1000 ppm phenol could be achieved with the packed bed bioreactor containing 6400 glass beads. Toxic effects of phenol were found to play a role at 1000 ppm influent concentration. With increase in dilution rate, the percentage degradation was decreased.

Abstract

Dahlia is an important bulbous flower crop which has position to increase economic earning of grower. Forty varieties were grown and studied for genotypic correlation of traits at C.S.Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, during 2011-12 and 2012-13. Vegetative and reproductive characters parameters were found to have considerable relationship which also indicated the scope for making improvement in dahlia. Plant height and maximum number of flower per head revealed the sustainable magnitude for crop improvement in dahlia crop.
