Abstract

During the next decade or so there will not be any spectacular development of newer welding or cutting processes other than the processes emerging called "gluing or adhesives" which is being developed at various laboratories now. The emphasis however will be on step-by-step development of the existing processes to improve quality and productivity in general and to reduce the demands on skill levels of the welder. Therefore, the development will be seen in three segments.

Abstract

In this issue there are two interesting papers that speak substantially about Welding Development in India. The first paper deals with the subject 'Welding Systems Development at BHEL, Tiruchirapalli'. The second paper is written as an overview of Welding Research, Education and Training at the Welding Research Institute. Tor any one of us who would like to have a knowledge capsule on how welding technology has advanced in our country through research and educational activities and has been adopted by the industry in general,these two papers will provide some insight to the key areas of work that we need to keep under sharp focus.

Abstract

In October 1986 issue of the Indian Welding Journal we published a paper on Robotics and its terminology which is considered a most significant development towards welding automation. It is known that Welding Robotics can play a big part in substantially increasing welding productivity covering almost all manufacturing industries concerned with welding and metal fabrication. However, automation in welding cannot be fully realised by using a Robot alone which is nothing but a programmable multi-axis welding manipulator.

Abstract

The first Associate Membership Examination of the Indian Institute of Welding was successfully held in January, 1988 as per schedule and the second examination is expected to be held during June/July, 1988. The examination system has already become a very important ongoing activity of our institute and it is heartening to note the generation of an all-round enthusiasm which has been reflected by the increase in the students membership and the substantial increase in the enrolment for the examination.

Abstract

Growth of Welding Industry in India largely depends on the advancement of technology and would require active involvement and participation of the R & D, Education and Standards Institutions. Simultaneously, efforts must be on to spread welding education to train engineers and technicians to cater to the changing role foreseen for them in the years ahead.

This January 1986 issue of the Indian Welding Journal announces its 18th Anniversary. We wish you, dear readers, a very happy participative and prosperous year.

Any change is a challenge. From the beginning of the last year, you have perhaps noticed that the IWJ has changed progressively. From the two column text presentation, it changed to a three column presentation to improve the space utilisation and reduce the cost of production. Abstract

In the history of the development of arc welding 10th October, 1885, is a significant date.

The Russian scientist, Nekolai Nikolaevich Benardos (1842-1905) was awarded with several patents for his "ELECTROHEPHAESTUS" system for carbon arc welding. The first one was the French patent dated 10th October, 1885, followed by Belgian (1885), England (1885), Germany (1885), Sweden (1885), then Rassian in 1886 and lastly U. S. in 1887.

With the social and economic pressures ever increasing on fabrication industries, the development of high productive welding consumables and equipment is perhaps the most important area where maximum emphasis is needed.
