Abstract

Portland cement production is under critical review due to the high amount of carbon dioxide gas released to the atmosphere. But at the same time, disposal of huge quantity of fly ash generated from the power plants is also becoming a big burning problem. This is detrimental to animal and plant life, since it pollutes the environment as well as it requires large area for its disposal, when availability of land get scarce day by day. Most of the plants now are facing shortage of dumping space of these waste materials. Most of this by product material is a currently dumped inland fill, thus creating a threat to the environment. In recent years attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash to partially replace the use of Portland cement in concrete are gathering momentum. Efforts are urgently underway all over the world to develop environmentally friendly construction materials, which make minimum utility of fast dwindling natural resources and help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this connection, Geopolymers are showing great potential and several researchers have critically examined the various aspects of their viability as binder system. Geopolymer concretes (GPCs) are new class of building materials that have emerged as an alternative to Ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC) and possess the potential to revolutionize the building construction industry. Considerable research has been carried out on development of Geopolymer concretes (GPCs), which involve heat curing. A few studies have been reported on the use of such GPCs f or structural applications. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the material and mixture proportions; the manufacturing processes, the fresh and hardened state characteristics of fly ash based geo polymer concrete are evaluated. In the present study the flexural behavior of geo polymer concrete was assessed and the behavior was found to be considerably more than that of conventional concrete.

Abstract

Conventional concrete tends to present a problem with regard to adequate consolidation in thin sections or areas of congested reinforcement, which leads to a large volume of entrapped air voids and compromises the strength and durability of the concrete. We can eliminate the problem by using self-compacting concrete (SCC), since it was designed to unite under its own mass. Normal concrete was designed as IS method and self-compacting concrete was designed by a simple mix design proposed by Nan Su. SCC was developed in 1988's by Prof. Hagime Okaura in Japan. SCC was one of the latest concrete in across the world. This project deals with the comparison of two different type of high strength concretes. Which is high strength of normal concrete and self-compacting concrete. An experimental and numerical study on mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength of self-compacting concrete (SCC) and the corresponding properties of normal compacting concrete (NC) were studied. The age at loading of the concretes varied between 7 and 28 days.

Abstract

Optimisation is the controlling factor in every sort of manufacturing process for better productivity with minimal usage of labour, materials and power .In this context structural optimisation is a challenging task for the engineering fields connected with manufacturing. With the introduction of computers in the process of structural analysis, structural optimisation also underwent drastic developments. It is alarming that the natural resources are exhausting at a high rate due to the industrialisation and the higher per capita usage of different metallic and non metallic substances. So the materials should be utilized with minimum usage and maximum efficiency for the conservation of nature and to cater for the future needs. The advancement in structural optimisation is the only remedy resorted for the efficient utilization of the resources in a scientific way. Compared to other engineering fields the developments in structural optimisation in civil engineering field is still far behind. So a collaborative effort from the various experts in different specialisation in civil engineering is resorted to the effective utilisation of this method to the advancement of cost effective utilisation of various resources.
