The global corrugated board packaging market is forecast to grow to 98 million tonnes in 2015 by a compound annual growth rate of 5% between 2010 and 2015. Despite the premier growth, inaccurate moisture control in corrugated board is posing a challenge to production system of whole corrugating industry. Moisture control is a critical issue in production and procession of corrugated boards. Being such a porous material, corrugated board can easily become too wet or dry wasting manufacturers crucial time, money and productivity. At one hand where too much water-content would cause boards to soften and submit to flute exposure after being produced, on other hand lack of water would make them to be crisp and easy to breakdown. The main objective of this study is to understand, analyse and predict various defects that might arise due to unbalanced moisture in the corrugated board such as washboarding and stripping in review of its manufacturing as well as flexographic printing.- The Influence of Various Paper Coating Pigments on Paper Performance and Printability: A Review

The paper industry is continuously and consistently improving paper quality and printability in order to meet higher printer and consumer standards. One key to improve print quality is to have a suitable coating on surface empirically so as to derive the mechanisms that improve final print quality. The technology to characterize paper coatings has evolved rapidly over the past several years. This technology is reviewed here in the context of coating component identification, the internal structure of coatings, physical and optical properties of coating surfaces and printability. The premise of this review is that techniques discussed here are applicable to coating pigments, coating formulations, end user properties and final performance on a typical multicolour printing press.- Productivity Optimization in Sheet Fed Offset Presses Through Effective Makeready Operations: A Review

In today's competitive climate, high productivity sheet fed presses play a crucial role in meeting turbulent printers demand and profitability. One approach to improve productivity is to reduce machine set up time using effective makeready operations. This session will act as a roadmap to set up effective makeready keeping in context the plate mounting, cleaning, sheet change, plate and impression adjustments, ink setting and speed adjustments. The effectiveness in makeready operations leads to some visible and non visible actions that when integrated with automation and management methodology provides novel techniques that improve machine productivity.- Machine Downtime: Causes and Optimization Strategies in Web-fed Offset Printing Press Organizations: A Case Study of "dainik Bhaskar Press", Hisar

Objective of this paper is to investigate major causes of machine downtime in Web-fed Offset Press Organizations and hence find out the best optimization strategies for downtime. Web-fed offset is a type of offset printing in which a continuous roll of paper is fed through the printing press. Even very high speed presses upto 75000 IPH have come to exist with full automation, still machine downtime is a strong point of concern among most of printers. Machine downtime is a period of time that a system fails to provide or perform its primary function and machine stops causing reduced efficiency of machine. The downtime data was collected on daily basis in consecutive three months February, March and April in Dainik Bhaskar Printing Press, Hisar. The results clearly indicated that downtime is caused mainly due to reel change and web break. Power failure, reel shaft puncture, operational mistakes, folder knife problem and web wrap around blanket are unperiodic and less prone still important factors to be considered by most of the printers. Keywords

Corrugated board has become quite versatile material in today's modern packaging world. The Corrugated board manufacturers and printers need to concentrate more on quality in order to meet higher customer expectation. Moisture content is a parameter which decides the ultimate end user properties and qualities of the corrugated board. This paper highlights the effect of moisture content on corrugated board manufacturing and printing. The work was carried out at Janus Packaging Pvt. Ltd., Baddi and moisture content data was collected on daily basis. The results clearly indicated that 8-12% moisture content is most suitable for corrugated board need to taken into consideration by manufacturers as well as printers. Keywords

Laser engraving of gravure cylinders is the latest and most exciting development now being used in the gravure market. Although laser engraving of gravure cylinders is a new variety for etching of gravure cylinders in gravure market, yet vulnerability of processes towards causing various defects exist in present system. Objective of this paper is to throw light on how frequently various defects happen during laser engraving of cylinders and to determine necessary steps to improve quality and efficiency of laser cut rotogravure cylinder production. The results indicated that pinholes, patches and depth variation are most frequently and majorly occurring problems in laser cut rotogravure cylinder manufacturing processes but improper dots and bludges are least occurring problems. Keywords

Reproducing correct colours in printing has been a point of strong concern among printers. Matching colour with original is the need of hour. But small difference in colour is always in the tolerance limit. ∆ E in offset printing process should be less than 2 as per standards. But in the digital printing no much research has been introduced regarding colour difference (∆ E). Objective of this paper is to find out ∆E in dry toner based digital printing on gloss coated paper. A master test chart was prepared using various tint patches, high quality test images and quality control strip produced using i1 basic pro. The test chart was printed in Digital Print Application Laboratory, Department of Printing Technology, GJUS&T, Hisar on Richo India Ltd. Digital Printing Press. The results indicated that ∆ E in dry toner based digital printing is comparable to sheet-fed offset printing on gloss grade coated paper stock. Keywords
