- Inspiratory Muscle Performance Following Diaphragmatic Resistance Training in Healthy Adults

Background: Diaphragmatic weight training has been found to be as effective as resistive inspiratory muscle training and better than the incentive spirometry training in patients with tetraplegia for improving respiratory muscle function. However a previous research concluded no improvement in inspiratory muscle functions among healthy subjects following diaphragmatic weight training. The present study was conducted to know the effects of diaphragmatic weight training on inspiratory muscle performance in healthy adults.Methods: Study had between- subject experimental design. 20 subjects (8 males and 12 females), having mean age 21.1 + 0.7182 yrs., were randomly allocated into two groups. Group A was experiment and Group B was control group. Diaphragmatic resistance training was given to the experimental groups for 5 weeks. Control group was not given any kind of training. Data for vital capacity and inspiratory capacity was recorded from each subject of both the groups (experimental and control) at baseline as well as after 5 weeks.
Data analysis and Results: Dependent t-test was used for within group comparison. Independent ttest was used for comparison between group A and B. Highly significant improvement in vital capacity and inspiratory capacity was found (p=.000 and p=.000 respectively) in experimental group as compared to control group.
Conclusion: Diaphragmatic resistance training improves vital capacity and inspiratory capacity.

Purpose of Study: The purpose of the study is to assess the effect of wearing collar on balance response and to determine whether hard collar or soft collar shows improvement in balance in patients suffering from Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency (VBI). The study is clinically significant to help determine type of cervical collar to be prescribed in patients suffering from VBI with balance problems.
Methodology: 40 subjects were included after screening for vertebrobasilar insufficiency and were assigned into two groups with 20 subjects in each group. Group A was given Philadelphia collar and Group B was given soft collar. Balance response before and after wearing collar was analysed using Berg Balance Scale.
Data analyses and result: Mann Whitney U test was used for analyses of data. Data of pre post Berg Balance score of soft collar and hard collar was measured by Wilcox- on signed rank test.
Conclusion: soft collar is more effective then hard collar in improving balance of patients suffering from VBI.

BackgroundPain, although a protective mechanism of our nervous system often prevents treatment of accompanying or underlying disorder and therefore it is imperative to attain analgesia. . Various modalities are used by physical therapists to relieve patient from pain. TENS is one of the most widely used modality by physical therapists for attaining analgesia.
MethodsThis experimental trial investigated the effect of unilateral and bilateral auricular acupuncture like TENS on pain threshold in sixty young adults. Subjects were randomized to either of three groups namely:- Group 1(Bilateral application of TENS), Group 2 (Unilateral application of TENS), and Group 3 (control - NO TENS group). Low frequency TENS was applied on auricular acupuncture points for 45 secs on Group 1&2. Readings for pain threshold were taken before and after completion of TENS treatment.
ResultsThere was a statistically significant difference in pain threshold values of auricular TENS group as compared to control group on comparison with one – way ANOVA (F=35.273). On pair wise comparison using Duncan’s new multiple range test, statistically significant differences were found (p<.05) between the pain threshold changes between group three (control group) as compared to group 1( bilateral TENS group) and group 2 (unilateral TENS group).However, no significant difference was observed between mean pain threshold changes of group 1 and 2.
ConclusionAuricular application of Acupuncture TENS as a part of physiotherapy treatment significantly increases pain threshold whether applied unilaterally or bilaterally.
