Transient acute left ventricular dysfunction (the broken heart syndrome) has been noted in patients predisposed to overtly stressful situations. First reported in Japan, the term Tako-tsubo describes an "octopus-trap" like geometry inflicted on the left ventricle by this condition. Often seen in post-menopausal women, the clinical presentation is difficult to differentiate from the coronary syndrome caused by atherosclerotic plaque rupture. Medical therapy appears to be the standard of care, conferring a favorable prognosis, with normalization of LV function within weeks.References
